Abstract Disposal of dyes wastewater into aquatic streams is considered as a major challenge due to its effect on water ecosystem. Direct dyes have a complex aromatic structure. Therefore, it is difficult to separate them from industrial wastewater. Conversely, fly ash is a main by-product pollutant generated from coal burning to fulfill energy requirements. In this study, thermochemical treatment process was applied to coal fly ash (CFA) in order to increase its surface area, improve its pore’s structure and enhancing its adsorption capacity for direct blue 78 dye (DB78) removal. The treated coal fly ash (TCFA) was characterized by physicochemical analyses such as XRD, XRF, TGA, SEM, FTIR, surface area (S BET ) and particles size analysis. Batch experiments were conducted to analyze the adsorption behavior for TCFA and to examine the DB78 dye removal efficiency. The physicochemical analysis results indicated that a higher increase in CFA surface area from 9.6 to 60.4 m 2 g −1 was obtained due to the modification process. The maximum removal efficiency using TCFA was 99.7% for initial dye concentration 10 mg/L and TCFA dose 2 g/L. The adsorption isotherm was studied by Langmuir and Freundlich model using different dye concentrations. The results showed that equilibrium data followed closely Langmuir isotherm model ( R 2 = 0.99) indicating monolayer and homogeneous adsorption process.

Uneven distribution and intensity of rainfall in subtropical semi-arid Vertisol creates different hydro-climaticcondition due to its mineralogy and expansive type of clays. Indeed, information on impact of moisture levels onsoil C- and N-mineralization in presence of residue and recommended fertilization is scarce. Thus, this incubationexperiment was conducted at ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil Science, Bhopal during 2018â€“19 with four moisture, twofertilizer, and two residue levels to evaluate the effects of fertilization and residue incorporation on moisture sensitivityof soil C- and N-mineralization. Application of fertilizer induced positive priming effect for CO2-C and increased by~ 28%. Residue- and fertilizer Ã— residue accelerated the Ccum by ~108 and 125%, respectively. Residue applicationcaused initial N-immobilization. A significant interaction was observed among fertilizer, residue and moisture contentfor both C- and N-mineralization. C-mineralization was amplified with increase in soil moisture content from 24to 40% moisture levels, but decreased at 48% moisture level. Irrespective of fertilization moisture sensitivity of Cand N mineralization was reduced by residue incorporation. But, fertilization led to highest moisture sensitivity ofN-mineralization. Thus, residue incorporation could be recommended as obligatory practice in sub-tropical Vertisolto decrease its moisture sensitivity and to maintain positive C balance and soil health.

Moisture Sensitivity Alteration of Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Mineralization in Vertisol

Safe disposal of huge quantity of fly ash is compulsory to avoid environmental problems, and contents of significant amount of plant nutrients, particularly phosphorus (P), make it a potential amendment in agriculture. A comparative assessment of P adsorption, release kinetics and enzymatic activities of weathered fly ash amended texturally different soils is yet to be explored. This article explores the influence of fly ash with or without FYM on P adsorption parameters and indices, release kinetics, P activity coefficient (PAC) and enzymatic activities in Inceptisol and Vertisol with the treatments comprising graded doses of weathered fly ash and FYM. Increased fly ash doses amplified the P adsorption in soils, which further increased with FYM application. Binding energy, adsorption maxima and P sorption index also augmented by increased doses of fly ash. Gibb’s free energy of adsorption indicated that P adsorption was due to chemisorption. However, rate of P release was 6–10 times higher at initial stages and increased concentration of P through fly ash and FYM quantified higher P diffusion rate. PAC was negatively influenced by higher quantity of fly ash, but FYM positively influences PAC. Enzymatic activities decreased in Inceptisol beyond 200 t ha−1 fly ash; however, 50 t ha−1 FYM nullifies the negative impact of fly ash and increased enzymatic activities in both the soils. Increased maximum P buffering capacity, PAC, enzymatic activities and liming effects on acidic soils suggested better management options of fly ash as slow release P source in crop production along with FYM.
