Wild mushrooms are a vital source of income and nutrition for many poor communities and of value to recreational foragers. Literature relating to the edibility of mushroom species continues to expand, driven by an increasing demand for wild mushrooms, a wider interest in foraging, and the study of traditional foods. Although numerous case reports have been published on edible mushrooms, doubt and confusion persist regarding which species are safe and suitable to consume. Case reports often differ, and the evidence supporting the stated properties of mushrooms can be incomplete or ambiguous. The need for greater clarity on edible species is further underlined by increases in mushroom-related poisonings. We propose a system for categorizing mushroom species and assigning a final edibility status. Using this system, we reviewed 2,786 mushroom species from 99 countries, accessing 9,783 case reports, from over 1,100 sources. We identified 2,189 edible species, of which 2,006 can be consumed safely, and a further 183 species which required some form of pretreatment prior to safe consumption or were associated with allergic reactions by some. We identified 471 species of uncertain edibility because of missing or incomplete evidence of consumption, and 76 unconfirmed species because of unresolved, differing opinions on edibility and toxicity. This is the most comprehensive list of edible mushrooms available to date, demonstrating the huge number of mushrooms species consumed. Our review highlights the need for further information on uncertain and clash species, and the need to present evidence in a clear, unambiguous, and consistent manner.

Reviewing the world's edible mushroom species: A new evidence-based classification system

Fungi are difficult to preserve and fossilize and due to the poor preservation of most fungal structures, it has been difficult to interpret the fossil record of fungi. Hyphae, the vegetative bodies of fungi, bear few distinctive morphological characteristicss, and organisms as diverse as cyanobacteria, eukaryotic algal groups, and oomycetes can easily be mistaken for them (Taylor & Taylor 1993). Fossils provide minimum ages for divergences and genetic lineages can be much older than even the oldest fossil representative found. According to Berbee and Taylor (2010), molecular clocks (conversion of molecular changes into geological time) calibrated by fossils are the only available tools to estimate timing of evolutionary events in fossil‐poor groups, such as fungi. The arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiotic fungi from the division Glomeromycota, generally accepted as the phylogenetic sister clade to the Ascomycota and Basidiomycota, have left the most ancient fossils in the Rhynie Chert of Aberdeenshire in the north of Scotland (400 million years old). The Glomeromycota and several other fungi have been found associated with the preserved tissues of early vascular plants (Taylor et al. 2004a). Fossil spores from these shallow marine sediments from the Ordovician that closely resemble Glomeromycota spores and finely branched hyphae arbuscules within plant cells were clearly preserved in cells of stems of a 400 Ma primitive land plant, Aglaophyton, from Rhynie chert 455–460 Ma in age (Redecker et al. 2000; Remy et al. 1994) and from roots from the Triassic (250–199 Ma) (Berbee & Taylor 2010; Stubblefield et al. 1987). Many other fungal preserved materials have been found and a very well‐preserved Ascomycota fungal fossil (Paleopyrenomycites devonicus), consisting of perithecia immersed within stems of a Devonian plant (Asteroxylon mackiei Kidston and Lang), provides a minimum age for the Ascomycota and Basidiomycota at 452 Ma (Berbee & Taylor 2010; Taylor & Gaines 1999, 2004b, 2005). A series of flavonoid derivatives containing 1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-a]pyridine were designed, synthesized and evaluated for their antifungal activity. Bioactivity tests showed that some target compounds exhibited the strong antifungal activity against Botrytis cinerea (B. cinerea), Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (S. sclerotiorum), and Phomopsis sp. Among them, the half maximal effective concentration (EC50) value of S2 against B. cinerea was 3.3 μg/mL, which was less than that of the control drug azoxystrobin (21.0 μg/mL). The EC50 value of S2 against S. sclerotiorum was 12.7 μg/mL, which was better than that of azoxystrobin (28.1 μg/mL). In addition, the in vivo protective and curative activities of S2 against blueberry were 92.0 and 79.8 % at 200 μg/mL, respectively, which were higher than those of the control drug azoxystrobin (89.4 and 71.7%). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and spore germination experiments showed that S2 could not only cause the mycelium damage but also inhibited the spore germination. Fluorescence microscopy (FM) observation, relative electrical conductivity measurement and cytoplasmic leakage assays indicated that S2 could affect cell membrane integrity by inducing lipid peroxidation and increasing cell membrane permeability as well as causing leakage of cytoplasmic contents. These results show that flavonoid derivatives containing 1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-a]pyridine had excellent inhibitory effects on B. cinerea, providing another supplement for the development of new pesticides. 

Novel flavonoid derivatives containing 1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-a]pyridine as potential antifungal agents: design, synthesis, and biological evaluation

Finding highly active molecular scaffold structures is always the key research content of new pesticide discovery. In the research and development of new pesticides, the discovery of new agricultural molecular scaffold structures and new targets still faces great challenges. In recent years, quinoline derivatives have developed rapidly in the discovery of new agriculturally active molecules, especially in the discovery of fungicides. The unique quinoline scaffold has many advantages in the discovery of new pesticides and can provide innovative and feasible solutions for the discovery of new pesticides. Therefore, we reviewed the use of quinoline derivatives and their analogues as molecular scaffolds in the discovery of new pesticides since 2000. We systematically summarized the agricultural biological activity of quinoline compounds and discussed the structure-activity relationship (SAR), physiological and biochemical properties, and mechanism of action of the active compounds, hoping to provide ideas and inspiration for the discovery of new pesticides.

Quinoline Derivatives in Discovery and Development of Pesticides.

Morphologically, nine different slow-growing protoclones were screened from regenerated protoplasts of heterokaryotic Agaricus bisporus. As such, the present study is the first report on differentiating homo- and heterokaryotic protoclones using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. Among 80 primers tested, the seven ISSR and seven RAPD primers selected for the analysis generated a total of 94 ISSR and 52 RAPD fragments, respectively. The ISSR fingerprinting also detected more polymorphic loci (38.29%) than the RAPD fingerprinting (34.61%). A principal coordinate analysis (PCA) was employed to evaluate the resolving power of the markers as regards differentiating protoclones. As a result, the mean polymorphism information content (PIC) for each marker system (i.e., 0.787 for RAPD and 0.916 for ISSR) suggested that ISSR is more effective for determining polymorphisms. The dendrograms constructed using RAPD, ISSR, and an integrated RAPD and ISSR marker system were highly correlated with one another as revealed by a high Mantel correlation (r= 0.98). The pairwise similarity index values also ranged from 0.64 to 0.95 (RAPD), 0.67 to 0.98 (ISSR), and 0.67 to 0.98 (RAPD and ISSR), whereas the mean similarity index values of 0.82, 0.81, and 0.84 were obtained for the RAPD, ISSR, and combined data, respectively. As there was a good correspondence between the RAPD and ISSR similarity matrices, ISSR would appear to be an effective alternative to RAPD in the genetic diversity assessment and accurate differentiation of homo- and heterokaryotic protoclones of A. bisporus.

To discover novel and effective antifungal candidates, a series of new curcumol derivatives were designed, synthesized, and evaluated their antifungal activity against five phytopathogenic fungi by the mycelium growth rate method. Derivatives c4, c22 and c23 exhibited excellent antifungal activity against Phomopsis sp. with EC50 values of 3.06, 3.07, and 3.16 μM, respectively. Specifically, compound c4 exhibited the strongest antifungal activity against Phomopsis sp., which was 44 times that of pyrimethanil (EC50=134.37 μM). The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated that compound c4 could cause cell senescence and death of Phomopsis sp. by changing the normal hyphal morphology and disrupting the normal metabolism of hyphal cells. Moreover, compound c4 showed excellent curative effect against Phomopsis sp. on kiwifruit. These findings confirmed that compound c4 has great potential as a potent antifungal agent.

Synthesis and Antifungal Activity of Curcumol Derivatives

Three new compounds named cynansteroid A (1), cynansteroid B (2) and cynansteroid C (3), together with nine known C21‐steroidal pregnane sapogenins (4–12) were isolated from the hydrolytic extract of the roots of Cynanchum auriculatum. The structures of cynansteroid A–C (1–3) were ascertained via the detailed analysis of the HR‐ESI‐MS, 1D and 2D NMR, and the calculated and experimental ECD data of cynansteroid B (2). Compound 11 displayed moderate inhibitory activity toward Verticillium dahliae Kleb (IC50=37.15 μM), furthermore, compounds 11 and 12 showed significant inhibitory activity against Phomopsis sp. (IC50=16.49 μM and 17.62 μM, respectively).
