Tetanuran theropods represent the majority of Mesozoic predatory dinosaur diversity and the lineage leading to extant Aves. Thus their history is relevant to understanding the evolution of dinosaur diversity, Mesozoic terrestrial ecosystems, and modern birds. Previously, the fragmentary and poorly sampled fossil record of basal (non-coelurosaur) tetanurans led to uncertainties regarding their basic interrelationships. This in turn prevented determining the relationships of many incompletely known taxa that nonetheless document a global radiation spanning more than 120 million years. We undertook an exhaustive examination of all basal tetanurans and all existing character data, taking advantage of recent discoveries and adding new morphological, temporal and geographic data. Our cladistic analysis of 61 taxa achieved significantly improved phylogenetic resolution. The interrelationships and evolution of basal theropod dinosaurs [X1481] (matrix)

The internal facies and sequence architecture of a Late Jurassic (Late Kimmeridgian) shallow carbonate ramp was reconstructed after the analysis and correlation of 17 logs located south of Teruel (northeast Spain). The studied rocks are arranged in five high-frequency sequences A–E (5–26 m thick) bounded by discontinuities traceable across the entire study area (20 × 25 km). Facies analysis across these sequences resulted in the reconstruction of three sedimentary models showing the transition from interior ramp environments (i.e., lagoon, backshoal, and shoal) to the progressively deeper foreshoal and offshore areas. Coral-microbial reefs (meter-sized patch and pinnacle reefs) have a variable development throughout the sequences, mostly in the foreshoal and offshore-proximal environments. The preferential occurrence and down-dip gradation of non-skeletal carbonate grains has been evaluated across the three models: low-energy peloidal-dominated, intermittent high-energy oolitic-dominated and high-energy oolitic–oncolitic dominated. The predominance of these non-skeletal grains in the shoal facies was mainly controlled by the hydrodynamic conditions and spatial heterogeneity of terrigenous input. The models illustrate particular cases of down-dip size-decrease of the resedimented grains (ooids, peloids, oncoids) due to storm-induced density flows. Offshore coarsening of certain particles (intraclasts, oncoids) is locally observed in the mid-ramp areas favorable for microbial activity, involving coral-microbial reef and oncoid development. The observed facies variations can be applicable to carbonate platforms including similar non-skeletal components, where outcrop conditions make the recognition of their three-dimensional distribution difficult.

Galve (Teruel, Spain) is not a single fossil site but an ensemble of more than 50 localities with Mesozoic terrestrial vertebrate remains of Tithonian-Lower Barremian age. Galve fossil sites belong to the Maestrazgo basin (Central Iberian Range), Gaive Subbasin, and appear in four geological formations: Higueruelas Formation (Tithonian), Villar del Arzobispo Formation (upper Tithonian-middle Berriasian), El Castellar Formation (uppermost Hauterivianlowermost Barremian) and Camarillas Formation (lower Barremian). Most sites contain bony remains, but there are also paleoichnological and paleoological sites, with dinosaur and other reptilian tracks and eggshells. Mammals and dinosaurs are the best-known Gaive vertebrates, but some studies on sharks, bony fishes, amphibians, squamates and crocodiles have been published. Some groups, like turtles and pterosaurs, have not practically been studied yet. Galve is the type locality of severa1 taxa: the shark Lonchidion microselachos, the amphibian Galverpeton ibericum, the dinosaur Aragosaurus ischiaticus, the mammals Galveodon nannothus, Lavocatia alfambrensis, Eobaatar hispanicus, Parendotherium herreroi, Spalacotherium henkeli and Pocamus pepelui, and the dinosaur eggshell Macroolithus turolensis. In this paper we revise the knowledge on Galve vertebrates, and update the faunal list of its fossil sites, taking into account, for the first time, the stratigraphic distribution of the taxa.

Abstract A synthesis of the sedimentary evolution of the Upper Jurassic carbonate epeiric ramps that developed in the northern part of the Iberian Basin (NE Spain) is presented. The facies distributions reconstructed from the analysis of a 200 km-long transect, show a transition from shallow to relatively deep sedimentation sites. The studied carbonate ramps record major long-term transgression, from mid-Oxfordian to mid-Kimmeridgian followed by progressive basinwards coastal shift until the major regressive event around the mid-Berriasian. Subsidence was relatively homogeneous across the northern Iberian Basin during most of the studied interval. Major episodes of differential subsidence occurred around the Oxfordian–Kimmeridgian transition and onwards from the mid-Tithonian. The sedimentary evolution and particular facies types of the successive Iberian carbonate ramps is described, considering five depositional sequences that have a long-term transgressive-regressive evolution. The Oxfordian sequence shows a sharp transition from shallow to deep ramp areas: from mixed siliciclastic-carbonate (ooidal, skeletal, peloidal) facies to condensed (i.e. spongiolithic, peloidal, glauconitic) facies in the open platform domain. In the two Kimmeridgian sequences (Kim1 and Kim2), the transition between shallow and deep areas is more gradual and thickness distribution across the ramp is more homogeneous. Coral-microbial reefs and oolitic-peloidal-skeletal shoals characterized the shallow areas. Towards the offshore domain, these facies grade rapidly to a tempestite-dominated lithofacies and then into thick lime mudstone successions (i.e. rhythmic marls-mudstone alternations). Shallow oncolitic-peloidal and skeletal facies covered wide areas of the carbonate ramp during the early Tithonian (Ti1 sequence) and graded basinwards to thick successions of well-bedded micrites. The middle Tithonian to lower Berriasian platform (Ti2 sequence) is only partly exposed and formed during a stage of more heterogeneous subsidence. It is characterized by a thick succession with metre-scale shallowing-upward sequences with local development of peritidal, algal-laminated caps. The factors that controlled the sedimentary evolution and major facies changes across the successive epeiric carbonate ramps are discussed by comparison to other Upper Jurassic platforms developed in the western Tethyan realm.

Different shallow marine units from the Jurassic-Cretaceous transition in Iberian Chain are well exposed in the outcrops of Northern Maestrazgo (Teruel). This work tries to show with precision the correlation between the different units present in this zone, and the position of Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary. Based on biostratigraphic markers and sequential correlation, a modified lithostratigraphic chart is proposed.
