Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Stabilization, Vectorization, Physicochemical Characterizations, and Biological Applications

The synthesis of different kinds of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) has attracted much attention. During the last few years, a large portion of the articles published about MNPs have described efficient routes to attain shape-controlled and highly stable MNPs with narrow size distribution. In this review, we have reported several popular methods including co-precipitation, microemulsion, thermal decomposition, solvothermal, sonochemical, microwave-assisted, chemical vapor deposition, combustion, carbon arc, and laser pyrolysis, for the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles.

Current methods for synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles

We have functionalized amorphous Fe2O3 nanoparticles with alkanesulfonic and octadecanephosphonic acids. TEM reveals nanoparticles 5−10 nm in diameter. FTIR spectra suggest that while in all cases the alkyl chains are packed in a solid-like arrangement, packing disorder increased with decreasing chain length. TGA of the sulfonic acid-functionalized Fe2O3 nanoparticles shows that moieties started to decompose and desorb from the iron oxide surface at about 260 °C. In the case of the octadecanephosphonic acid (OPA)-functionalized Fe2O3, moieties started to decompose and desorb at 340 °C. It is suggested that free Fe−OH groups can serve as proton donors to assist in the sulfonic acid desorption process and that because of the diprotic nature of the phosphonic acid these free surface Fe−OH groups may no longer be available. Self-Assembled Monolayers of Alkanesulfonic and -phosphonic Acids on Amorphous Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of 4 nm metallic FePt particles were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS), magnetometry and M\"ossbauer spectroscopy. At low temperatures, the M\"ossbauer data reveal an unusually high and well defined magnetic hyperfine field compared to FePt multilayer or bulk samples. The magnetic anisotropy of the as-prepared FePt particles embedded in a layer of oleic acid molecules arises from surface contributions. The distribution of anisotropy under the constraint of a constant particle moment and volume is reflected in the hysteresis loop as a function of external field at 4.3 K. Due to faceting as seen in the high resolution TEM images, the magnetization reversal does not follow the simple Stoner-Wohlfarth switching. The annealing experiments show that at a size of 4 nm the high-temperature fcc phase is stable up to at least $560\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}\mathrm{C}$ as long as agglomeration and particle growth is prevented.
