Three-dimensional macroporous nanopaper from crumpled graphene and nanocellulose is embedded in elastomer matrix to achieve stretchability up to 100%. The stretchable graphene nanopaper is demonstrated for efficient human-motion detection applications.

Highly Stretchable Piezoresistive Graphene–Nanocellulose Nanopaper for Strain Sensors

It remains challenging to fabricate strain-sensing materials and exquisite geometric constructions for integrating extraordinary sensitivity, low strain detectability, high stretchability, tunable sensing range, and thin device dimensions into a single type of strain sensor. A percolation network based on Ti3C2Tx MXene/carbon nanotube (CNT) composites was rationally designed and fabricated into versatile strain sensors. This weaving architecture with excellent electric properties combined the sensitive two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2Tx MXene nanostacks with conductive and stretchable one-dimensional (1D) CNT crossing. Stretchable Ti3C2Tx MXene/Carbon Nanotube Composite Based Strain Sensor with Ultrahigh Sensitivity and Tunable Sensing Range

The use of nanomaterials for strain sensors has attracted attention due to their unique electromechanical properties. However, nanomaterials have yet to overcome many technological obstacles and thus are not yet the preferred material for strain sensors. In this work, we investigated graphene woven fabrics (GWFs) for strain sensing. Different than graphene films, GWFs undergo significant changes in their polycrystalline structures along with high-density crack formation and propagation mechanically deformed. The electrical resistance of GWFs increases exponentially with tensile strain with gauge factors of ~103 under 2~6% strains and ~106 under higher strains that are the highest thus far reported, due to its woven mesh configuration and fracture behavior, making it an ideal structure for sensing tensile deformation by changes in strain. The main mechanism is investigated, resulting in a theoretical model that predicts very well the observed behavior.

Flexible sensors can be envisioned as promising components for smart sensing applications, including consumer electronics, robotics, prosthetics, health care, safety equipment, environmental monitoring, homeland security and space flight. The current review presents a concise, although admittedly nonexhaustive, didactic review of some of the main concepts and approaches related to the use of nanoparticles (NPs) in flexible sensors. The review attempts to pull together different views and terminologies used in the NP-based sensors, mainly those established via electrical transduction approaches, including, but, not confined to: (i) strain-gauges, (ii) flexible multiparametric sensors, and (iii) sensors that are unaffected by mechanical deformation. Highly Stretchy Black Gold E-Skin Nanopatches as Highly Sensitive Wearable Biomedical Sensors

We demonstrate that thin films consisting of cross-linked nanoparticle aggregates function as highly sensitive strain gauges. The sensors exploit the exponential dependence of the interparticle tunnel resistance on the particle separation. Their sensitivity (gauge factor) is two orders of magnitude higher than that of conventional metal foil gauges and rivals that of state-of-the-art semiconductor gauges. We describe the strain gauge behavior in a tunneling model that predicts the dependence of the gauge factor on several parameters, in particular, the nanoparticle size, the interparticle separation gap, and the conductance of the linker molecules.
