An arrangement (10) and method provides energy consumption estimates of a multiple component electrical system controlled by a processor. The arrangement includes a component model (14, 16, 18, 20, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44) corresponding to each component of the system. Each component model includes an energy consumption value for each one of a plurality of operating modes of its corresponding component. The operation of the system is then simulated on an operating cycle by operating cycle basis. A mode detector (58) determines the operating mode of each system component during each cycle of the simulated operation and an energy consumption evaluator (60) determines energy consumption of each component for each operating cycle. An accumulator then determines a total energy consumption of all of the system components (66).

Perception-aware low-power audio decoder for portable devices

Considering the demand for a wireless connection to a portable MP3 player, we propose an integration design of a MP3 player with a Bluetooth hand-free/set. The Bluetooth module serves as the wireless channels between the MP3 player and the wireless headphone, the wireless microphone and recording memory cards, the FM receiver, and the cellular phone. Audio switches in our design are used to facilitate the corresponding audio paths. We have chosen a highly integrated chip set to fulfill the required functions, resulting in less power consumption, and in an extension of the recharge cycle, in this integration design, we use a simple operational amplifier with a negative feedback circuit to suppress the common mode noise resulting from high frequency signal coupling between the audio paths. Overall, our prototype design has already demonstrated good sound quality for a wireless MP3 player.

More and more mobile devices are being produced to fulfill increasing consumer demand for immediate entertainment, instant information, and communications anywhere at any time. Mobile and wearable devices are designed to have the longest possible active-on and standby times and lowest weight and smallest size. Size and weight can be significantly decreased by using energy-efficient design methodologies. System-on-chip (SOC) and system-in-package (SIP) emerged as key technologies for developing wearable devices. The design of energy-aware gadgets includes not only hardware, but also software techniques. In this paper a single-chip multimedia system is reviewed for use within wearable devices. The presented results are derived from studying the behavior of an MP3 player produced by austriamicrosystems.
