Introduction to data compression

The notion of perceptual coding, which is based on the concept of distortion masking by the signal being compressed, is developed. Progress in this field as a result of advances in classical coding theory, modeling of human perception, and digital signal processing, is described. It is proposed that fundamental limits in the science can be expressed by the semiquantitative concepts of perceptual entropy and the perceptual distortion-rate function, and current compression technology is examined in that framework. Problems and future research directions are summarized. >

Signal compression based on models of human perception

Wireless communication has become a ubiquitous part of modern life, from global cellular telephone systems to local and even personal-area networks. This 2004 book provides a tutorial introduction to digital mobile wireless networks, illustrating theoretical underpinnings with a wide range of real-world examples. The book begins with a review of propagation phenomena, and goes on to examine channel allocation, modulation techniques, multiple access schemes, and coding techniques. GSM and IS-95 systems are reviewed and 2.5G and 3G packet-switched systems are discussed in detail. Performance analysis and accessing and scheduling techniques are covered, and the book closes with a chapter on wireless LANs and personal-area networks. Many worked examples and homework exercises are provided and a solutions manual is available for instructors. The book is an ideal text for electrical engineering and computer science students taking courses in wireless communications. It will also be an invaluable reference for practising engineers.

Mobile Wireless Communications

This paper describes the 8 kb/s speech coding algorithm G.729 which has been standardized by ITU-T. The algorithm is based on a conjugate-structure algebraic CELP (CS-ACELP) coding technique and uses 10 ms speech frames. The codec delivers toll-quality speech (equivalent to 32 kb/s ADPCM) for most operating conditions. This paper describes the coder structure in detail and discusses the reasons behind certain design choices. A 16-b fixed-point version has been developed as part of Recommendation G.729 and a summary of the subjective test results based on a real-time implementation of this version are presented.

Audio Signal Processing and Coding

A low-delay code-excited linear prediction (LD-CELP) speech coder which is expected to be standardized in 1992 as a CCITT G Series Recommendation for universal applications of speech coding at 16 kb/s is presented. The coder achieves a one-way coding delay of less than 2 ms by making both the LPC predictor and the excitation gain backward-adaptive and by using a small excitation vector size of five samples. The official CCITT laboratory tests revealed that the speech quality of this 16 kb/s LD-CELP coder is either equivalent to or better than that of the CCITT G.721 standard 32-kb/s ADPCM coder for almost all conditions tested. A description of the LD-CELP algorithm, its implementation on the DSP32C for CCITT testing, and performance results from these tests are presented. >
