This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Soft-computing techniques and ARMA model for time series prediction

To date, clustering techniques have always been oriented to solve classification and pattern recognition problems. However, some authors have applied them unchanged to construct initial models for function approximators. Nevertheless, classification and function approximation problems present quite different objectives. Therefore it is necessary to design new clustering algorithms specialized in the problem of function approximation. This paper presents a new clustering technique, specially designed for function. approximation problems, which improves the performance of the approximator system obtained, compared with other models derived from traditional classification oriented clustering algorithms and input-output clustering techniques.

A new clustering technique for function approximation

The main architectures, learning abilities and applications of radial basis function (RBF) neural networks are well documented. However, to the best of our knowledge, no in-depth analyses have been carried out into the influence on the behaviour of the neural network arising from the use of different alternatives for the design of an RBF (different non-linear functions, distances, number of neurons, structures, etc.). Thus, as a complement to the existing intuitive knowledge, it is necessary to have a more precise understanding of the significance of the different alternatives. In the present contribution, the relevance and relative importance of the parameters involved in such a design are investigated by using a statistical tool, the ANalysis Of the VAriance (ANOVA). In order to obtain results that are widely applicable, various problems of classification, functional approximation and time series estimation are analyzed. Conclusions are drawn regarding the whole set.

Analysis of the Functional Block Involved in the Design of Radial Basis Function Networks

The logarithmic image processing model (LIP) is a robust mathematical framework, which, among other benefits, behaves invariantly to illumination changes. This paper presents, for the first time, two general formulations of the 2-D convolution of separable kernels under the LIP paradigm. Although both formulations are mathematically equivalent, one of them has been designed avoiding the operations which are computationally expensive in current computers. Therefore, this fast LIP convolution method allows to obtain significant speedups and is more adequate for real-time processing. In order to support these statements, some experimental results are shown in Section V
