The excitation functions of radio-nuclides have been measured for the 20Ne + 55Mn system in the energy range ≈51–164 MeV by employing the recoil catcher technique followed by off-line gamma-ray spectrometry. It has been observed that some of the residues produced directly via complete and/or incomplete fusion (ICF) give rise to independent yield while some of the residues are produced in the decay of higher charge precursor isobars through β+ and/or electron capture and give rise to cumulative yield. Independent yields of radio-nuclides 71, 70As, 69, 67Ge and 67, 66Ga have been separated out from the measured cumulative yields. The measured excitation functions are then compared with statistical model code PACE-2. It has been observed that excitation functions of the measured complete fusion channels are in good agreement with theoretical predictions. However, a significant enhancement in the measured excitation functions for the residues, produced in the break-up of the projectile into α-clusters, has been observed. This enhancement may be attributed to the ICF process. Moreover, ICF-fraction has also been calculated by dividing the ICF-cross-section to the total fusion cross-section and found to increase with the projectile energy as well as with the entrance channel mass-asymmetry of the interacting partners.

Investigation of incomplete fusion in 20Ne + 55Mn reactions at 3–8 MeV/nucleon

Spin distributions of various reaction products populated via complete and/or incomplete fusion of {sup 16}O with {sup 169}Tm have been measured at projectile energy {approx_equal}5.6 MeV/nucleon. Particle (Z=1,2) {gamma}-coincidences have been employed to achieve the information about involved reaction modes on the basis of their entry state spin populations. The experimentally measured spin distributions for incomplete fusion products have been found to be distinctly different than those observed for complete fusion products. The driving input angular momenta associated with incomplete fusion products have been found to be relatively higher than complete fusion products, and increases with direct {alpha}-multiplicity. It has also been observed that incomplete fusion products are less fed and/or the population of lower spin states are strongly hindered, while complete fusion products indicating strong feeding over a broad spin range.

Spin-distribution measurement: A sensitive probe for incomplete fusion dynamics

Spin distributions for various evaporation residues populated via complete and incomplete fusion of $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ with $^{124}\mathrm{Sn}$ at $6.3$ MeV/nucleon have been measured, using charged particles ($Z=1,2$)-$\ensuremath{\gamma}$ coincidence technique. Experimentally measured spin distributions of the residues produced as incomplete fusion products associated with ``fast'' $\ensuremath{\alpha}$- and $2\ensuremath{\alpha}$-emission channels observed in the ``forward cone'' are found to be distinctly different from those of the residues produced as complete fusion products. Moreover, ``fast'' $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-particles that arise from larger angular momentum in the entrance channel are populated at relatively higher driving input angular momentum than those produced through complete fusion. The incomplete fusion residues are populated in a limited, higher-angular-momentum range, in contrast to the complete fusion products, which are populated over a broad spin range.

Incomplete fusion dynamics by spin distribution measurements

In this paper, we present the results of our investigation of reaction dynamics leading to incomplete fusion of heavy ions at moderate excitation energies, especially the influence of incomplete fusion on complete fusion of 12C -induced reactions at specific energies ≈ 4–7.2M eV/nucleon. Excitation functions of various reaction products populated via complete and/or incomplete fusions of a 12C projectile with 93Nb, 59Co and 52Cr targets were measured at several specific energies ≈ 4–7.2 MeV/nucleon, using a recoil catcher technique, followed by off-line γ-ray spectrometry. The measured excitation functions were compared with theoretical values obtained using the PACE4 statistical model code. For representative non-α-emitting channels in the 12C + 93Nb system, the experimentally measured excitation functions were, in general, found to be in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. However, for α-emitting channels in the 12C + 93Nb, 12C + 59Co, and 12C + 52Cr systems, the measured excitation functions were higher than the predictions of the theoretical model code, which may be credited to incomplete fusion reactions at these energies. An attempt was made to estimate the incomplete fusion fraction for the present systems, which revealed that the fraction was sensitive to the projectile energy and mass asymmetry of the entrance channel.

Investigation of the influence of incomplete fusion on complete fusion of 12C-induced reactions at ≈ 4–7.2 MeV/nucleon

Angular distributions and angular correlations have been measured for the emission of one and two \ensuremath{\alpha}-particles in the $^{18}\mathrm{O}+^{207,208}\mathrm{Pb}$,$^{209}\mathrm{Bi}$ reactions at several beam energies above the Coulomb barrier. The results rule out fusion evaporation as the main reaction mechanism for the channels involving \ensuremath{\alpha}-particle emission and support the interpretation of the breakup of the $^{18}\mathrm{O}$ projectiles into at least $^{14}\mathrm{C}$+\ensuremath{\alpha} and $^{10}\mathrm{Be}+^{8}\mathrm{Be}$ before fusion.
