We analyse how inheritance of synchronization constraints should be supported. The conclusion of our analysis is that inheritance of synchronization constraints should take the form of incrementally more restrictive constraints for derived subclasses. Our conclusion is based on the view that combinations of behavior in object-oriented languages yield subclasses that extend superclass behavior. We give a notation for describing synchronization constraints. In our notation, synchronization constraints can be inherited and aggregated. We present a number of examples that illustrate the fundamental concepts captured by our notation. Synchronization constraints are described as restrictions that apply to invocation of methods. Application of restrictions is pattern-based, which allows the same restriction to apply to multiple methods and multiple restrictions to apply to the same method.

Inheritance of Synchronization Constraints in Concurrent Object-Oriented Programming Languages

Adopting the object-oriented paradigm for the development of large and complex software systems offers several advantages, of which increased extensibility and reusability are the most prominent ones. The object-oriented model is also quite suitable for modelling concurrent systems. However, it appears that extensibility and reusability of concurrent applications is far from trivial. In addition, very little attention has been paid by the conventional object-oriented development methodologies to the analysis and design of
synchronisation constraints for concurrent objects.
To address these problems, in this thesis the framework of composition-filters, an extension to the object-oriented model, is adopted. An analysis is presented of the problems involved in reusing and extending concurrent objects, in particular the so-called inheritance anomalies. Based on this analysis, a set of criteria for effective extensible concurrent objectoriented
programming languages is formulated.
The thesis introduces techniques for the creation of concurrency and the synchronisation of concurrent activities, fully integrated within the (object-oriented) composition-filters model. Important properties of the proposed object model are: all objects are -potentially- active, intra-object concurrency is supported and synchronisation specifications are fully separated
from method implementations. The applicability and expressive power of the proposed technique are demonstrated, and it is shown how reusability and extensibility of concurrent objects are achieved.

SUMMARY During the last decade object-oriented programming has grown from marginal influence into widespread acceptance. During the same period, progress in hardware and networking has changed the computing environment from sequential to parallel. Multi-processor workstations and clusters are now quite common. Unnumbered proposals have been made to combine both developments. Always the prime objective has been to provide the advantages of object-oriented software design at the increased power of parallel machines. However, combining both concepts has proven to be notoriously difficult. Depending on the approach, often key characteristics of either the object-oriented paradigm or key performance factors of parallelism are sacrificed, resulting in unsatisfactory languages. This survey first recapitulates well-known characteristics of both the object-oriented paradigm and parallel programming, and then marks out the design space of possible combinations by identifying various interdependencies of key concepts. The design space is then filled with data points: for 111 proposed languages we provide brief characteristics and feature tables. Feature tables, the comprehensive bibliography, and web-addresses might help in identifying open questions and preventing re-inventions. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A survey of concurrent object-oriented languages

Synchronization components in an object oriented framework are hard to express because of their conflicting and interfering aims with the reuse and extension concepts. We identified two problems : the synchronization problem deals with exclusive access to shared dat% and the behavior problem deals with availability of methods. We propose a new genetic solution which is much more object-oriented than the previous ones in the sense that the mecanisms proposed to solve the two above problems arc tlrst-class. This solution is generic in the sense that it does not suppose any object nor communication models. In order to provide a full taste of our preposition, we instantiate it by choosing particular object and communication models.

A generic object-oriented concurrency mechanism for extensibility and reuse of synchronization components

The problems that arise, the so-called inheritance anomalies are analyzed and presented in this paper. A set of requirements for extensible concurrent languages is formulated. As a solution to the identified problems, an extension to the object-oriented model is presented; composition filters. Composition filters capture messages and can express certain constraints and operations on these messages, for example buffering. In this paper we explain the composition filters approach, demonstrate its expressive power through a number of examples and show that composition filters do not suffer from the inheritance anomalies and fulfill the requirements that were established.

An Object-Oriented Model for Extensible Concurrent Systems: the Composition-Filters Approach

This paper presents the integration of a concurrency control mechanism in class-based languages. Synchronization constraints are expressed as separate control clauses and are factorized for a class of objects. Interference of this mechanism with inheritance and transactions is examined and solutions are proposed. This paper addresses language and system issues: canonical examples of synchronized objects are provided and an implementation of the mechanism is outlined.
