Saturation compensation schemes for vector controlled induction motor drives

The paper discusses effects of main flux saturation in field–oriented induction machines and proposes improved schemes for rotor flux space vector calculation. Field–oriented control with rotor flux computation out of the measured quantities is elaborated. Two rotor flux computer structures are analyzed. The first one is based on stator voltages and currents as measured variables, while the second scheme carries out calculations on the basis of sensed stator currents and rotor speed (position). The sensitivity of the constant parameter rotor flux computers to saturation degree variation is investigated in detail. Modified structures of the computing schemes are then proposed, which account for change in saturation level in the machine. The modified rotor flux calculators are derived from flux state–space model of a saturated induction machine. Rotor flux computation in saturated field-oriented induction machines

Effects caused by the variable degree of main flux saturation in induction machines with field-oriented control are considered. An indirect vector controller with a fixed value of magnetizing inductance is assumed, and the influence of variable saturation in steady-state and during transients is investigated. It is shown that the saturation effect is likely to be pronounced during operation in the field-weakening region, while its influence is small in the constant flux region if the value of magnetizing inductance in the controller is correctly set. Experimental identification of the rotor time constant in the field-weakening region is performed, and the results are presented. A modified flux calculator is derived, which can provide satisfactory operation in the field-weakening region. Its structure involves the magnetizing curve of the machine. Study of main flux saturation effects in field-oriented induction motor drives

A nonlinear field-oriented model is derived for saturated AC machines. The theory is applied to a field-oriented controlled induction machine operating in the field-weakening region where the change of saturation of the main flux paths plays an important role. It is shown that with the implemented current control, the control response is seriously distorted by the effects of variable saturation during field-weakening. When the linear model is used it is not possible to show these distortions.
