Survival of genetically engineered Pseudomonas fluorescens in soil in competition with the parent strain
TL;DR: There was a trend towards a decrease in the proportion modified strain/parent strain in both mixes in the rhizosphere of wheat, and a stabilization of the proportions between the modified strains and the parent.

Determination of plasmid transfer frequency in soil: Consequences of bacterial mating on selective agar media
Eric Smit,J. D. van Elsas +1 more
TL;DR: The results indicated that conjugation in bentonite- or nutrient-amended soil was readily detected; however, part of the transconjugants could be assigned to be the result of matings on the selective plates, and the use of nalidixic acid instead of streptomycin in conjunction with rifampicin for donor counter selection inhibited conjugal transfer on selective plates.

A procedure for the metagenomics exploration of disease-suppressive soils
TL;DR: A streamlined soil metagenomics protocol to extract bacterial cells from a Rhizoctonia solani AG3 suppressive loamy sand soil followed by DNA extraction and purification, and the preparation of a clone library in an efficient host/vector system is presented.

Selection of Variovorax paradoxus-like bacteria in the mycosphere and the role of fungal-released compounds
TL;DR: Evidence is provided for the contention that tricholomataceous fungi can create specific niches in soil for the V. paradoxus-related strain HB44 and that glycerol may be a main carbon source that drives the selection of this organism.
