The thermodynamic assessment of the Cu-Zr and Ti-Zr systems is carried out using the CALPHAD method The Gibbs energy of Cu-Zr liquid alloys is described by the ideal associated solution model The excess Gibbs energy of Ti-Zr liquid alloys and Cu-Zr and Ti-Zr solid solutions is descried by models with Redlich-Kister polynomials The Gibbs energy of Cu-Zr intermetallic compounds is described by models taking into account their formation enthalpy and entropy A set of self-consistent parameters of the models is obtained using data on phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties of the phases The calculated phase diagrams of the systems and values of thermodynamic properties of the phases are in good agreement with experimental information The relative thermodynamic stability of supercooled liquid alloys and competitive crystal phases of the Cu-Zr system are analyzed

Thermodynamic assessment of the Cu-Ti-Zr system. II. Cu-Zr and Ti-Zr systems

The development of CALPHAD-type thermodynamic database for Ti or Zr based biomedical alloys has been spurred by the increased interest in efficiently tailoring an alloy composition to obtain high stability of β_bcc, low Young's modulus, and free of detrimental phases. However, the thermodynamic prediction is not adequate to be performed without the information of key sub-ternary Ti–Zr–Sn system. In present work, the thermodynamic assessment of Ti–Zr–Sn system is performed via a critical evaluation of phase equilibria and microstructure development in this ternary system. The partial isothermal sections at 1323 K and 1473 K with Sn content below 40 at. % are obtained by analyzing chemical compositions and crystal structures of individual phases in the annealed alloys. The composition homogeneity range of most phases is validated to favor a ternary extension paralleling to the Ti–Zr axis. Particularly, β_bcc and η phases (with the chemical composition (Ti, Zr)5Sn3+x) show complete solubility of Ti and Zr from Ti–Sn edge to Zr–Sn edge. With the database, negligible ternary solubility of Zr4Sn phase, microstructure development in the as-cast samples, and the controversial conclusions in literature are discussed. Most of the experimental findings, including equilibrium phase constitution, solidification sequence, DSC signals, projections of liquidus, are reproduced in a self-consistent way. The work moves towards the completeness of multi-component Ti/Zr thermodynamic database. It can be used for composition design of novel metastable β-type biomedical alloys.

CALPHAD assessment of bio-oriented Ti–Zr–Sn system and experimental validation in Ti/Zr-rich alloys

The phase relations of the Ti-Fe-Zr system at 873 and 1173 K were experimentally investigated by using the equilibrated alloys. Four ternary phases were determined stable at 1173 K. Two of them were line compounds with fixed Fe/(Ti, Zr) ratio, while the other two showed ellipse-shaped homogeneity. There were eight three-phase equilibria and a continuous single phase field of β(Ti, Zr) in the isothermal section at 1173 K. The solubility of Zr in Fe 2 (Ti, Zr) and Ti in (Fe, Ti) 2 Zr was measured to be 25.5 at% and 6.1 at%, respectively. The remaining binary intermetallic phases hardly dissolved the third component. The phase relationships in the isothermal section at 873 K were similar to those at 1173 K over the composition range of 0–50 at% Fe. In this isothermal section, five three-phase equilibria were observed and they were all related with the newly found ternary phases. The phase relations measured in this work are of significant difference from the existing ones obtained with the diffusion couple.

Experimental investigation of phase equilibria in the Ti-Fe-Zr system

The isothermal sections at 1073 and 1273 K, and liquidus surface projection of the Ti–V–Zr system were investigated using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Combined with experimental results in the present work and literature, the Ti–V–Zr system was optimized by the means of the CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagram) method. The solution phases, liquid, hcp (Ti, Zr) and bcc (Ti, V, Zr), were modeled with the substitutional solution model, and the compound V 2 Zr was treated as (Ti, V, Zr) 2 (Ti, V, Zr) based on its thermodynamic model in the V–Zr system and the experimental solid solubility of Ti in the Ti–V–Zr system. A set of self-consistent thermodynamic parameters of the Ti–V–Zr system was obtained.

Experimental investigation and thermodynamic modeling of the Ti–V–Zr system

The temperature and enthalpy changes of the h.c.p.-to-b.c.c. transformation in several Ti-Zr-Hf alloys have been measured using an adiabatic calorimeter. A comparatively smooth variation of the entropy of transformation with composition is noted for Ti-Zr, Ti-Hf and the ternary alloys. The difference between the enthalpies of formation of the alloys in the two crystallographic forms can be deduced from the results and the values are consistent with the form of the phase diagrams.
