This paper discusses the contribution of biomass in the future global energy supply. The discussion is based on a review of 17 earlier studies on the subject. These studies have arrived at widely different conclusions about the possible contribution of biomass in the future global energy supply (e.g., from below 100 EJ yr-1 to above 400 EJ yr-1 in 2050). The major reason for the differences is that the two most crucial parameters - land availability and yield levels in energy crop production - are very uncertain, and subject to widely different opinions (e.g., the assessed 2050 plantation supply ranges from below 50 EJ yr-1 to almost 240 EJ yr-1). However, also the expectations about future availability of forest wood and of residues from agriculture and forestry vary substantially among the studies. The question how an expanding bioenergy sector would interact with other land uses, such as food production, biodiversity, soil and nature conservation, and carbon sequestration has been insufficiently analyzed in the studies. It is therefore difficult to establish to what extent bioenergy is an attractive option for climate change mitigation in the energy sector. A refined modeling of interactions between different uses and bioenergy, food and materials production - i.e., of competition for resources, and of synergies between different uses - would facilitate an improved understanding of the prospects for large-scale bioenergy and of future land-use and biomass management in general. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the evidence for the pattern of growth decline with age and discusses the evidence for the mechanisms that may be responsible. It begins with an overview of the proposed mechanisms. The chapter also presents a framework for understanding the changes in stand productivity with age, because many of the proposed mechanisms are linked and affect carbon allocation. The available information on the importance of various mechanisms behind growth decline, in the context of the stand carbon cycle is presented. The common patterns of a decline in stand leaf area and leaf photosynthetic capacity suggest a new model of carbon balance with stand development. In this model, photosynthesis and above-ground dry-matter production increase with canopy development. After the forest reaches a maximum leaf area, photosynthesis and dry-matter production decline as leaf area, photosynthetic capacity, and photosynthesis also decline. The model assumes that allocation to respiration and below ground to roots and symbionts is a constant fraction of assimilation over the life of a forest stand.

Age-Related Decline in Forest Productivity: Pattern and Process

Each perennial woody plant is a highly integrated system of competing carbohydrate sinks (utilization sites). Internal competition for carbohydrates is shown by changes in rates of carbohydrate movement from sources to sinks and reversals in direction of carbohydrate transport as the relative sink strengths of various organs change. Most carbohydrates are produced in foliage leaves but some are synthesized in cotyledons, hypocotyls, buds, twigs, stems, flowers, fruits, and strobili. Although the bulk of the carbohydrate pool moves to sinks through the phloem, some carbohydrates are obtained by sinks from the xylem sap. Sugars are actively accumulated in the phloem and move passively to sinks along a concentration gradient. The dry weight of a mature woody plant represents only a small proportion of the photosynthate it produced. This discrepancy results not only from consumption of plant tissues by herbivores and shedding of plant parts, but also from depletion of carbohydrates by respiration, leaching, exudation, secretion, translocation to other plants through root grafts and mycorrhizae and losses to parasites. Large spatial and temporal variations occur in the use of reserve- and currently produced carbohydrates in metabolism and growth of shoots, stems, roots, and reproductive structures. A portion of the carbohydrate pool is diverted for production of chemicals involved in defense against fungi, herbivores, and competing plants. Woody plants accumulate carbohydrates during periods of excess production and deplete carbohydrates when the rate of utilization exceeds the rate of production. Stored carbohydrates play an important role in metabolism, growth, defense, cold hardiness, and postponement or prevention of plant mortality.

Phosphoenol pyruvate (PEP) carboxylase has been partially purified from leaves of the C-4 tropical grass Pennisetum purpureum and shown to have allosteric properties. When initial velocities of incorporation of 14C from NaH14CO3 into oxaloacetate were determined as a function of concentration of either HCO3-or Mg2+ typical Michaelis-Menten kinetics were observed. Both Lineweaver-Burk and Hill plots were linear with values of n (interaction coefficients) of about one. Sigmoid Michaelis-Menten plots were obtained with PEP as the variable substrate. Following (NH4)2SO4 fractionation and DEAE-cellulose chromatography Lineweaver-Burk plots were concave upwards and Hill plots gave n values of two. With enzyme purified further by Sephadex G-200 chromatography Lineweaver-Burk plots were concave downwards and Hill plots gave values of n of 0.5 at low concentrations of PEP increasing to about 4 at high concentrations of PEP. Enzyme activity was modified by inclusion of glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) in the assay mixtures. When the eoncentration of G6P exceeded that of PEP, the initial velocity tended towards zero. When the concentration of G6P equalled that of PEP activity was increased. When the concentration of PEP exceeded that of G6P, the velocity approached that recorded in control samples at saturating concentrations of PEP. The rate of reaction was also increased on addition of NADH, and decreased by oxaloacetate and malate.

HIGH rates of photosynthesis and low rates of photorespiration are found in several plant species in which the photosynthetic carbon reduction (PCR) cycle is augmented by a second carboxylation system, the C-4 pathway1,2. This pathway does not result in a net fixation or reduction of carbon, but seems to operate as a mechanism for concentrating CO2 at the site of reductive assimilation. It has been widely accepted that the carboxylation reaction of the C-4 pathway is associated with the chloroplasts of mesophyll -cells, while PCR cycle activity is restricted to the bundle sheath chloroplasts. Investigations3–5 indicate, however that mesophyll chloroplasts do contain PCR cycle activity, arni that the C-4 pathway is located in the cytoplasm of non-green and mesophyll cells.
