Indirect damage detection for bridges using sensing and temporarily parked vehicles

Scanning the bridge’s frequencies from the passing vehicle’s vibration data has been frequently investigated recently. However, in previous studies, vehicles were typically simplified to quarter- or half-car models, and apparent disparity could be observed between the models and real vehicles. To make the vehicle model more practical, in this study, a 3D vehicle model is built to extract the bridge’s frequencies from vehicle vibrations. For the first time, equations for calculating the contact-point (CP) response of the 3D vehicle model are derived with tire damping. Furthermore, residual CP responses between front and rear wheels are utilized to eliminate the inverse effects of road roughness, making the bridge frequencies outstanding in the frequency domain. The robustness of the proposed method is tested under different influence factors, and two possible measurement errors are as follows: the sensor position and axle distance when applying the proposed method in engineering. Results show that the proposed method performs stably under the influence of different road roughness classes and tire damping. Bridge frequencies can be identified when the vehicle is travelling at a highway speed (108 km/h in this study). Environmental noises can submerge the bridge’s high-order frequencies but have little influence on the low-frequency range. High bridge damping will restrain the transmission of bridge vibration to the vehicle, making high-order bridge frequencies less visible. In addition, the errors introduced by a vehicle body sensor position can be eliminated when calculating the CP responses for tires, thus will not influence bridge frequency identification. To avoid possible errors induced by manual measurement of the axle distance, a novel cross-correlation function-based method is employed, which is verified effective and practical for calculating residual CP responses.

Influence of the composite interface on the mechanical properties of semi-flexible pavement materials

Damage modeling techniques are essential tools for revealing the impact pattern of damage on structural responses. Currently, different damage level parameters are defined for different damage modeling techniques, but there is no established equivalence among them. This might plague researchers in their selection of damage modeling techniques for theoretical and numerical studies. To address this challenge, comparative studies of different damage modeling techniques for beam-like structures were conducted, and their impact on vehicle-bridge-interaction (VBI)-based structural health monitoring was analyzed. First, the theoretical basis of four damage modeling techniques, that is, element stiffness loss, element mass increase, cracked beam element, and crack spring element, were analyzed, and equivalent damage level relationships were established based on beam frequencies. Then, a finite element simulation of the VBI system consisting of a two-axle vehicle and a beam-like structure with damage was formulated and verified. Finally, the impacts of different damage modeling techniques with unified damage levels on the dynamic responses were studied, and the feasibilities of damage identification using vehicle and bridge responses under different damage modeling techniques were compared. The results indicated that the dynamic responses generated by different damage modeling techniques varied under the same damage level. The damage modeling technique using the crack spring element posed the most significant impact on the VBI responses, the cracked beam element and element stiffness loss techniques had the equivalent impact, but the element mass increase technique showed a negligible impact. Damage location and severity could be well detected by the cracked beam element and element stiffness loss techniques. However, the dynamic responses generated by the element mass increase technique could not be used to identify the damage. Vehicle responses were more useful than bridge responses for damage identification, demonstrating the advancement of indirect monitoring of bridge health conditions using an instrumented passing vehicle.

Comparative study of damage modeling techniques for beam-like structures and their application in vehicle-bridge-interaction-based structural health monitoring

Bridges and viaducts are critical components of railway transport infrastructures, providing safe and efficient means for trains to cross over natural barriers such as rivers and valleys. Ensuring the continuous safe operation of these structures is therefore essential to avoid disastrous economic consequences and even human losses. Drive-by methodologies have emerged as a potential and cost-effective monitoring solution for accurately and prematurely detecting damage based on instrumented vehicles while minimizing disruptions to train operations. This paper presents a critical review of drive-by methodologies applied to bridges and viaducts. Firstly, the premises of the method are briefly reviewed, and the potential applications are discussed. In sequence, several works involving the use of drive-by methodologies for modal characteristic extraction are presented, encompassing the most important methodologies developed over time as well as recent advancements in the field. Finally, the problem of damage identification is discussed—both in relation to modal and non-modal parameter-based techniques considering the most promising features and the current advancements in the development of methodologies for damage detection based on machine learning algorithms. A comprehensive conclusion is presented at the end of the article, summarizing the achievements and providing perspectives for future developments. By critically assessing the application of drive-by methodologies to bridges and viaducts, this paper contributes to the advancement of knowledge in this crucial area, emphasizing the significance of continuous monitoring for ensuring the integrity and safety of these vital transport infrastructures.

Drive-by Methodologies Applied to Railway Infrastructure Subsystems: A Literature Review—Part I: Bridges and Viaducts

Extraction of bridge mode shapes from the response of a two-axle passing vehicle using a two-peak spectrum idealized filter approach

In order to reduce the excessive vibration responses of a reinforced concrete frame structure induced by several vibrating screens working simultaneously, field vibration monitoring and some vibration reduction measures are carried out. The results of field vibration monitoring show that the maximum vertical vibration of the structure exceeds 106% of the limitation of building vibration. The results of the structural response analysis show that the excessive structural vibration is attributed to the resonance, as the frequency of the vibrating screens coincides with vertical natural frequency of the floors of the factory structure. Based on this fact, three vibration control measures, including damping, active vibration isolation of vibrating screens and structural vibration absorption, are proposed to mitigate the excessive vibration. In order to analyze the vibration control performance of the proposed schemes, the finite element dynamic model of the factory building structure is established, and the model is verified by the results of vibration and mode tests. Then, the damping system, vibration isolation system and vibration absorption system are set up in the models, and the vibration control performance of the three schemes are investigated. The results show that the measures, including vibration isolation and absorption, can reduce the vibration by more than 80%. Combined with the demand for a short construction period, the active vibration isolation of vibrating screens is finally selected. After the implementation of the scheme, the field monitoring data show that the structural vibration response is consistent with the finite element result and obviously weakened to meet the limitation. This study can provide a reference for the vibration control design for similar screening factory buildings.
