We have designed and tested a family of silicon nitride cantilevers ranging in length from 23 to 203 μm. For each, we measured the frequency spectrum of thermal motion in air and water. Spring constants derived from thermal motion data agreed fairly well with the added mass method; these and the resonant frequencies showed the expected increase with decreasing cantilever length. The effective cantilever density (calculated from the resonant frequencies) was 5.0 g/cm3, substantially affected by the mass of the reflective gold coating. In water, resonant frequencies were 2 to 5 times lower and damping was 9 to 24 times higher than in air. Thermal motion at the resonant frequency, a measure of noise in tapping mode atomic force microscopy, decreased about two orders of magnitude from the longest to the shortest cantilever. Short cantilevers for atomic force microscopy

There is a demand for good theoretical understanding of the response of an atomic force microscope cantilever to the extremely nonlinear impacts received while tapping a sample. A model and numerical simulations are presented in this paper which provide a very pleasing comparison with experimental results. The dependence of the cantilever amplitude and phase upon the sample stiffness, adhesion and damping are investigated using these simulations, and it is found that `topographic' tapping images are not independent of sample properties, nor will it be trivial to measure materials' properties from the tapping data. Cantilever dynamics in atomic force microscopy

Tapping mode atomic force microscopy measurements were performed for patterned self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of −S(CH2)15CH3 and −S(CH2)15COOH groups on a polycrystalline Au substrate. Height and phase images of these SAMs were obtained as a function of the driving amplitude A0 and the set-point amplitude Asp. Factors influencing the contrasts of these images are discussed in terms of the simple approximation that the essential consequence of bringing the tip closer to the sample surface is to change the force constant of the cantilever.

On the factors affecting the contrast of height and phase images in tapping mode atomic force microscopy

Several experimental effects that occur in tapping-mode atomic force microscopy are examined: apparent hysteresis effects in force probes and frequency sweeps and distortions in imaging. It is found through examinations of the phase space that they can all be reduced to one common cause: the existence of more than one stable state of the tip vibration for certain parameters. It is shown that the experimental effects can be explained considering only the phase space under the assumption that measurement noise exists. Numerical simulations confirm the theoretical and experimental findings.
