Control learning: present and future

In this special issue is to indicate foresight, innovation, and strategy for the future direction of e-learning, more than web-oriented teaching and multipoint videoconferencing, for collaborative, distributed, experiential learning and creation of new knowledge, with youngsters around the world, which hence promote mutual understanding for global peace. Emphasis will be on knowledgeable and inspiring papers (but not limited) on the use of GRID networking technology with distributed computer simulation for experiential (hands-on) learning through broadband Internet, across national, continental and oceanic boundaries. Subjects are in any fields of e-learning and e-healthcare/telemedicine, in research, case studies, project descriptions, implementation, reports from the field or book review. Preparing this special issue with Dr. Salmon, took 6 months, from the beginning to the arrival period to the on your screen. This period was shorter than the first special issue publishing in 2004. Of course this success belongs to this issue's guest editor who I will explain a bit details him belove and what did he do during in his period. During this process, Dr. Salmon served very healthy communication between the authors. In addition, she spared his valuable time, beside his other academic activities and responsibilities in the name of her university, her lectures, and researches, duties for distance education field and for TOJDE as well. Each article in this issue has therefore been read carefully by Gilly; me and Dr. Gokdag. This process has maximized the quality and rigour of the published articles. In addition to the articles, " notes for editor " books review and news, sections are still keeping in this issue too. "Anadolu University's Articles" and "TOJDE's links are getting more" columns are still keeping in this issue too. I would like to express my sincere thanks especially to Dr. Salmon in the name of my University and also for TOJDE she was the leader of the guest editorial team in this special issue. She will give detail info about structure of the articles in her " From Guest Editors " article. I strongly believe that experience gained on this third special issue would encourage us and other interested colleagues in the field in the near future. Encyclopedia of Distance Learning

A verifier is provided for assessing unique characteristics exhibits by a user over a period of time. The unique characteristics are captured through various interactions with the user over time using a habit capture system which models the user's characteristics when he or she uses a keyboard, a mouse or a digitizer, among others. When the system is first used, the user is prompted to answer various questions, some of which inquire into personal information. As the user responds, information representative of the user is captured, including keyboard typing patterns, mouse click patterns, misspelling patterns, among others. Data captured by the habit capture system is provided to a verifier which samples the user's characteristics and compares the characteristics of the current user with that stored in a database.

Internet based training

The business rules that underlie an enterprise emerge as a new category of system requirements that represent decisions about how to run the business, and which are characterized by their business-orientation and their propensity for change. We introduce a decision making methodology which addresses several aspects of the business rules lifecycle: acquisition, deployment and evolution. We describe a meta-model for representing business rules in terms of an enterprise model, and also a decision support sub-model for reasoning about and deriving the rules. A technique for automatically extracting business rules from the decision structure is described and illustrated using business rules examples inspired by the London Ambulance Service case study. A system based on the metamodel has been implemented, including the extraction algorithm.

A decision making methodology in support of the business rules lifecycle

The option of obtaining education over networks is quickly becoming a reality for all those who have access to the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW). However, at present, network-based education (NBE) over the WWW and the Internet in general faces a number of pitfalls. The problems range from inadequate end-user quality of service (QoS), to inadequate materials, to shortcomings in learning paradigms, and to missing or inappropriate student assessment and feedback mechanisms. In this paper, we discuss some major issues that, although mostly solved for NBE, still face Web-based education (WEE). These include the required workflow-oriented technological and quality of service support. In discussing the issues, we use examples from a wide-area NBE/WBE system called NovaNET and a WEE system called Web Lecture System (WLS). We recommend that WEE system developers construct operational user (workflow) profiles before building their content and interfaces. Our experience is that, especially for synchronous WEE systems, user-level round-trip keystroke delays should not exceed about 250 ms and the overall availability of the system (including network-related service failures) should be at least 0.95. We also suggest that a successful WEE system will have a sound auto-adaptive knowledge assessment component, a "virtual" laboratory capability, and a set of strong collaborative functions.

Workflow and end-user quality of service issues in Web-based education

Many distance learning systems claim to be interactive, but few can offer two-way video, on-the-fly interaction and application sharing. To address these limitations, our research group built the Interactive Remote Instruction (IRI) system, which links sites over a high-speed intranet, allowing students at geographically dispersed satellite campuses and community colleges to take a class together. Access from home PCs through a Windows NT port is planned but not yet available. IRI improves on the Old Dominion University's Teletechnet system in five areas: video resolution, asymmetrical video presence, interaction, teacher support and computer simulations.

Interactive distance learning over intranets

In recent years, we have seen the introduction and use of many distance learning systems. Some of these systems are characterized as interactive, which means the dominant mode of instruction is live or synchronous using networked multimedia technology such as audio, video and shared workspaces. In this paper, we present the common features and essential elements that should be implemented in such systems. Throughout this paper, we will use as a model and case study the IRI-h system (for Interactive Remote Instruction-heterogeneous) that we have developed and implemented in Java and have used to support distance learning at Old Dominion University.

The Essential Elements of Interactive Multimedia Distance Learning Systems

This paper describes our experience in using a multimedia project management and software engineering environment, Decision-based Hyper-multimedia CASE (DHC), to support the Low-Visibility Landing and Surface Operations (LVLASO) project at the NASA Langley Research Center. The purpose of the LVLASO project is to allow pilots to land and taxi airplanes when visibility is impeded due to adverse weather conditions. NASA is supporting this effort by developing new software and hardware for use on the flight deck. We are utilizing DHC to capture the decisions and documents generated during this project''s life cycle. DHC supports a new Decision-based Systems Development paradigm, which allows the organization of the project by the decisions which shape the end-products and associated documents. The experiences summarized in this paper demonstrate the value of a hyperlinked multimedia project space in developing large, group collaborative projects.

Project Management Using Hypermedia CASE Tools

In this paper we present an analogy-based approach enhanced by a decision structure to synthesize new formal specifications once a design decision has to be changed. To perform an informed change one has to take into consideration a very rich set of knowledge sources and decisions even in the case of very simple problems. We show that in order to make a consistent and complete modification one has to perform a trade-off among the set of interactions between various facets of the problem to be solved, rather than to pursue a more traditional linear, transformational, decompositional process. As a result of these interactions the change of a decision is not a local action, but rather a complex one that implies changes in several parts of the specifications.

Analysis of Decisions Modification Impact in Specifications Evolution

IRI-h (for Interactive Remote Instructionheterogeneous) is a Java-based cross-platform distributed education instruction system for heterogeneous network environments. In this paper, we introduce the design and operation of an application level gateway that is seamlessly integrated within IRI-h’s architecture to handle class participants with no multicast connectivity or limited bandwidth such as home users. A gateway prototype is fully implemented in Java and tested within an experimental lab setup. Preliminary performance results indicate the effectiveness and feasibility of our design.
