Cattle performance with Brachiaria and Panicum maximum forages in an integrated crop-livestock system

The objective of this work was to evaluate the nutrition, accumulation of nutrients in residual straw, pure seed yield, and seed quality of the tropical forage grasses 'Mombaca' and 'Xaraes' subjected to topdressing with nitrogen fertilizer management. Field experiments were carried out in the municipalities of Rancharia and Presidente Prudente, in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The treatments included a control (without N topdressing) and four N fractionation forms at different forage stages: 150 kg ha-1 N, at the vegetative phase (VP); 150 kg ha-1 N, at the beginning of the reproductive phase (RP), between panicle initiation and the prebooting stages; 100 kg ha-1 N, at VP plus 50 kg ha-1 N at RP; and 50 kg ha-1 N at VP plus 100 kg ha-1 N at RP. Fertilization with N as topdressing, regardless of the N fractionation form, increased N concentration in the flag leaf and in residual straw, and the quantities of N accumulated by 'Mombaca' and 'Xaraes' forage grasses. The application of all or most N in the VP increased the quantities of residual straw and of P and K accumulated by the 'Mombaca' forage grasses. The application of all or most N in the RP provided a greater pure seed yield and N use efficiency in both forage grasses. The seed physiological quality of the forages is not affected by fertilization with N topdressing.

Nitrogen management of forage grasses for nutrition, seed production, and nutrients in residual straw

Crop-livestock integration is the production strategy that consists of the diversification and integration of the different productive, agricultural and livestock systems, within the same area. Thus, the goal was to evaluate the production, forage quality and cattle performance in Paiaguas palisadegrass and Tamani grasses in different forms of animal supplementation in crop-livestock integration. The study was set up a randomized block experimental design, with four replicates, in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of two forages (BRS Tamani and BRS Paiaguas) and two animal supplementation strategies (mineral and protein-energy supplementation), in a crop-livestock integration system. Paiaguas palisadegrass showed higher forage production in all grazing cycles. Both forages showed satisfactory results in terms of average daily weight gain and total weight. The provision of protein supplementation to animals did not interfere with animal performance. Paiaguas palisadegrass and Tamani guinea grass showed potential in crop-livestock integration in succession to soybean and may be an alternative of quality food to be offered in the dry season. The system contributed to maintaining the sustainability of animal production on pasture.

Production, forage quality and cattle performance in Paiaguas palisadegrass and Tamani grasses in different forms of animal supplementation in crop-livestock integration

The objective of this study was to evaluate the grazing of goats in a grass monoculture system and in intercropping systems of grass + legumes. A randomized block design was adopted, with the treatments arranged in a split-plots scheme. The plots consisted of three cropping systems: monoculture—Andropogon gayanus cv. Planaltina; mixture I—A. gayanus cv. Planaltina + Stylosanthes cv. Campo Grande; and mixture II—A. gayanus cv. Planaltina + Calopogonium mucunoides. The subplots consisted of two grazing cycles. The highest (P = 0.04) total forage mass (TFM) was recorded in the mixture I (A. gayanus cv. Planaltina + Stylosanthes. cv. Campo Grande), which was 2.6 ± 0.1 tons DM/ha. The crude protein (CP) was lower in the monoculture which also showed the highest content of neutral detergent fiber (NDF). The grazing time in the monoculture was the longest (8.23 ± 1.14 h). The goats used a longer time for rumination (P < 0.01) in the mixture I. The lowest (P < 0.01) bite rate was found in mixture II in comparison to the other cropping systems. The bite rate was higher (P < 0.01) in grazing cycle II than in all the other cropping systems. In mixture I, the Stylosanthes cv. Campo Grande, and in mixture II, the C. mucunoides presented the lowest (P < 0.01) δ13C value in the forage. The highest forage intake occurred in the mixture systems (P < 0.01) in comparison to the monoculture. The mixture pastures presented better results for forage mass, nutritive value, and intake in comparison to the monoculture.

Goat performance on pure Andropogon gayanus pastures or associated with legumes

This study evaluated the nutrient concentration of cultivars Brachiaria brizantha and estilosantes "Campo Grande" in cropping and intercropping systems under different planting methods, for a period of two years. The experimental design was a complete randomized block, with measurements repeated over time, with four replications which treatments consisted of the following systems: estilosantes "Campo Grande"; "Xaraes" grass; "Marandu" grass in monocropping or intercropped with estilosantes "Campo Grande" in rows or at broadcast. The evaluations were conducted for two years in fall, winter, spring and summer on the same plots. The results showed that intercropping grass and legume influences the nutritional status of forage improving nutrient concentration. In general, the rows planting provided better nutrient concentrations.
