Science Requirements and Detector Concepts for the Electron-Ion Collider

The VMM3a is a System on Chip (SoC) custom Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC)1. It is the production version which will be used as the front ASIC for both Micromegas and sTGC detectors of the ATLAS Muon New Small Wheels upgrade at CERN. Due to its highly configurable parameters it has been proposed for several tracking detectors and other experiments. It is fabricated in the 130 nm Global Foundries 8RF-DM process. The ASIC integrates 64 channels, each providing charge amplification, discrimination, neighbour logic, amplitude and timing measurements, analog-to-digital conversions, and either direct output for trigger or multiplexed readout within a data-driven readout system. The front-end amplifier can operate with a wide range of input capacitances, has adjustable polarity, gain and peaking time. The ASIC has been tested on resistive Micromegas and sTGC prototypes in test beam campaigns at CERN.

The ATLAS Experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider: A Description of the Detector Configuration for Run 3

The instantaneous luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN will be increased up to a factor of five with respect to the present design value by undergoing an extensive upgrade program over the coming decade. The most important upgrade project for the ATLAS Muon System is the replacement of the present first station in the forward regions with the so-called New Small Wheels (NSWs). The NSWs will be installed during the LHC long shutdown in 2019/2020. Small-Strip Thin Gap Chamber (sTGC) detectors are designed to provide fast trigger and high precision muon tracking under the high luminosity LHC conditions. To validate the design, a full-size prototype sTGC detector of approximately 1.2 × 1.0 m 2 consisting of four gaps has been constructed. Each gap provides pad, strip and wire readouts. The sTGC intrinsic spatial resolution has been measured in a 32 GeV pion beam test at Fermilab. At perpendicular incidence angle, single gap position resolutions of about 50 μm have been obtained, uniform along the sTGC strip and perpendicular wire directions, well within design requirements. Pad readout measurements have been performed in a 130 GeV muon beam test at CERN. The transition region between readout pads has been found to be 4 mm, and the pads have been found to be fully efficient.

Performance of a full-size small-strip thin gap chamber prototype for the ATLAS new small wheel muon upgrade

A novel microstrip sensor geometry, the stereo annulus, has been developed for use in the end-cap of the ATLAS experiment’s strip tracker upgrade at the HL-LHC. Its first implementation is in the ATLAS12EC sensors, a large-area, radiation-hard, single-sided, AC-coupled, n + -in-p design produced by the ITk Strip Sensor Collaboration and fabricated by Hamamatsu Photonics in early 2017. The results of the initial testing of two ATLAS12EC batches are presented here with a comparison to specification. The potential of the new sensor shape to reinvigorate endcap strip tracking is explained and its effects on sensor performance are isolated by comparing the bulk mechanical and electrical properties of the new sensor to the previous iteration of prototype, the conventional barrel ATLAS12A sensor. The surface properties of the new sensor are evaluated for full-size unirradiated sensors as well as for mini sensors unirradiated and irradiated with protons up to a fluence of 2 . 2 × 1 0 15  neq cm−2. The results show that the new stereo annulus ATLAS12EC sensors exhibit excellent performance and the expected irradiation evolution.
