Within the framework of the LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU), the new LINAC4 is currently being commissioned to replace the existing LINAC2 proton source at CERN. After the expected completion at the end of 2016, the LINAC4 will accelerate H − ions to 160 MeV. To measure the transverse emittance of the H − beam, a method based on photo-detachment is proposed. This system will operate using a pulsed laser with light delivered via an optical fibre and subsequently focused onto the H − beam. The laser photons have sufficient energy to detach the outer electron and create H 0 /e − pairs. In a downstream dipole, the created H 0 particles are separated from the unstripped H − ions and their distribution is measured with a dedicated detector. By scanning the focused laser beam across the H − beam, the transverse emittance of the H − beam can be reconstructed. This paper will first discuss the concept, design and simulations of the laser emittance scanner and then present results from a prototype system used during the 12 MeV commissioning of the LINAC4.

The 160 MeV H− beam from the Linac4 (L4) linear accelerator at CERN will be injected into the proton synchrotron booster (PSB) with a new H− charge-exchange injection system. It will include a stripping foil, to convert H− into protons by stripping off the electrons. To gain experience with these very fragile foils, prior to the installation in the PSB, and test different foil materials and thicknesses, lifetimes of the foils, the foil changing mechanism and interlocking functions, a stripping foil test stand will be installed in the L4 transfer line in 2015. This paper describes the mechanical design of the system and discusses the test possibilities and parameters.

The changeover from Linac2 to Linac4 in CERN’s injector chain will allow increasing the injection energy into the PS Booster from 50 MeV to 160 MeV [1]. Transverse phase space painting will be performed in the horizontal plane, by means of four stacks of four KSW kicker magnets. The KSW magnets are located outside the injection region and will produce a 35 mm closed orbit bump, with falling amplitude during the injection to accomplish transverse phase space painting to the required emittance. New magnets with two different types of coils are being built using the existing design. The magnets are made of two halves, which are assembled together around a vacuum ceramic chamber. In order to reduce the beam impedance, the ceramic chamber is internally coated by a thin titanium layer. A new multiplelinear waveform generator has been developed to provide the high flexibility in the KSW kicker magnets current decay to fulfil the requirements of all the different users (LHC, nTOF, ISOLDE, CNGS, etc.).

A NEW HARDWARE DESIGN FOR PSB KICKER MAGNETS (KSW) FOR THE 35 mm TRANSVERSE PAINTING IN THE HORIZONTAL PLANE

In 2020, after the CERN accelerators complex Long Shutdown 2 (LS2), a novel Linac4 (L4)-to-PS Booster (PSB) charge-exchange injection system will allow to transform the L4 160 MeV H- beam into H+ , which will be injected into the four PSB superposed rings. For this, a 200 µg/cm2 carbon stripping foil will convert negative hydrogen ions (H- ) into protons by stripping off the electrons. L4 is now performing operational reliability runs, which include a stripping foil test stand installed in the L4 transfer line. These tests will permit to gain experience on the fragile foils, test different foil materials and thicknesses, measure the efficiency and lifetime of the foils, and evaluate the foil changing mechanism as well as the interlocking functions. This paper briefly describes the stripping foil test stand setup, before reporting on the obtained important test results.

The CERN PS Booster (PSB) is presently undergoing an ambitious consolidation and upgrade program within the frame of the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project. This program comprises a new injection scheme for Hions from CERN’s new Linac4, the replacement of the main RF systems and an energy upgrade of the PSB rings from 1.4 to 2 GeV which includes the replacement of the main magnet power supply as well as the upgrade of the extraction equipment. This paper describes the status and plans of this work program.

STATUS OF THE 160MeB H-INJECTION INTO THE CERN PSB

CERN’s Linac2 currently injects protons with a kinetic energy of 50 MeV into the PS Booster (PSB). Linac2 will be replaced by Linac4 which will inject Hions with a kinetic energy of 160 MeV into the PSB. In order to enable the PSB for charge-exchange injection, it will be equipped with a new injection system. The proposed charge-exchange injection system will use carbon foils (one for each of the four PSB rings) to remove the electrons from the Hions. The remaining protons will then be merged with the already circulating proton beam. Two percent of the injected beam are expected to be either incompletely stripped or unstripped, and will be sent to 4 internal H0/Hinjection dumps (one per PSB ring). This paper focuses on the induced activation in the future injection region. The radiological impact of proposed material choices for the internal dumps has been assessed by establishing Work and Dose Plannings for the most important foreseen interventions. The expected ambient dose equivalent rates at the various work locations have been obtained by FLUKA Monte Carlo simulations. In addition, the activation of the carbon foils and the derived need of protection measures during foil exchanges are discussed.
