Over the last few years, there has been a tremendous increase in the number of interactive multimedia presentations prepared by different individuals and organizations. In this paper, we present an algebra for creating and querying interactive multimedia presentation databases. This algebra operates on trees whose branches reflect different possible playouts of a set of presentations. The algebra not only extends all the classical relational operators to such databases, but also introduces a variety of novel operators for combining multiple presentations. As our algebra supports merging parts or all of existing presentations, this algebra can also be used as an authoring tool for creating multimedia presentations. We prove a host of equivalence results for queries in this algebra, which may be used to build query optimizers for interactive presentation databases.

An algebra for creating and querying multimedia presentations

There are a variety of temporal logics appropriate for a variety of reasoning tasks. The underlying model of time appropriate to the application can range from discrete natural numbers and integers to dense linear real numbers or to algebras of intervals and trees. The temporal language can be built from a few simple temporal connectives, if they are adequately expressive or we can have many more connectives, or add metric information or fix points if we can afford to risk sacrificing the speed of reasoning to gain increased expressiveness. The author has recently shown the surprising result that as far as computational complexity of reasoning is concerned, it is just as easy to reason with an adequately expressive language over real numbers time, as it is to reason with traditional simple operators on the discrete natural numbers flow of time. In this paper we build on that new result to give an account of the computational complexity of all the decision problems for any temporal logic using standard style temporal connectives over any of the common classes of linear flows of time. Distributed Multimedia Database involves network technology, distributed control, security, and multimedia computing. This chapter discusses fundamental concepts and introduces issues of image database and digital libraries, video-on-demand systems, multimedia synchronization, as well as some case studies of distributed multimedia database systems. Requirements of multimedia database management systems and their functions are also presented.

Distributed multimedia databases

The relations among temporal intervals can be used to model all time dependent objects. We propose a fast mechanism for temporal relation compositions. A temporal transitive closure table is derived, and an interval-based temporal relation algebraic system is constructed. Thus, we propagate the time constraints of arbitrary two objects across long distances n by linear time. We also give a complete discussion of different possible domains of interval relations. A set of algorithms is proposed to detect time conflicts and to derive reasonable interval relations. The algorithms are extended for time-based media in an arbitrary n-dimensional space.

The algebra of spatio-temporal intervals

Relations among temporal intervals can be used to assist the automatic generation of multimedia presentations. The authors analyze the domains of interval temporal relations. A set of algorithms is proposed to derive reasonable relations between intervals. Possible conflicts in the user specification are firstly detected and eliminated. The mechanism then constructs partial order relations among temporal intervals before the presentation time chart is built. The algorithm is extended for objects in an arbitrary n-dimensional space. Thus, presentation layouts in 2-D space, or virtual reality object representations in 3-D space can be constructed. They use their algorithms to design a reasoning system that generates the schedule and layout of multimedia presentations.

Toward a generic spatial/temporal computation model for multimedia presentations

Proposes a mechanism and a system for the automatic generation of interactive multimedia presentations from their specifications. A presentation specification contains three parts: the resources, the temporal information and the spatial information. We use an icon programming technique and a graphical user interface to allow the presentation designer to quickly specify what he/she wants. Our system takes these requirements and relies on inference rules written in Prolog to generate interactive presentations. These inference rules are based on interval temporal logic and important issues in multimedia presentations, such as the hardware limitations of an ordinary personal computer and the properties of a multimedia resource. Our prototype system run under Microsoft Windows. Early experience of using the system shows that it is feasible to use logical inference rules to assist with the design of good multimedia presentations.
