Liposarcomas are malignant tumors of adipocytes. The current report describes a liposarcoma in a 2.5-year-old, mixed-breed commercial sow that was detected during meat inspection. On gross examination, a firm, whitish, multinodular, 20 cm ×10 cm mass was observed in the perirenal area along with smaller nodules multifocally scattered within the renal parenchyma. Histological examination revealed an anaplastic sarcoma with clear intracytoplasmic lipidic vacuoles that were positive for Sudan black staining. Most of the cells were also positive for S100 and vimentin immunohistochemistry. Based on these results, a diagnosis of a perirenal liposarcoma was established. To the authors' knowledge, no previous reports of liposarcomas in pigs have been published. This report also includes a review of the literature published on animal liposarcomas.

have over 0 5 IU/ml and only 1\", have over 3-0 IU/ml. Since these reference preparations are of equine origin and contain IgM antibodies as well as IgG class antibodies we carried out a further survey, with 3000 random donor samples, against a prepared human serum kindly assayed for us by Dr Sheffield at the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control as 2-0 IU/ml. In this second series we found that only 4 9\"O of donors had antitoxin levels over 0 01 IU/'ml and only 0-58\",, over 2 0 IU/ml. The overall incidence of donors with detectable antibody ( 2 0 IU/ml) is 1 in 200 or 0 500. These small proportions of random donors with diphtheria antibodies may be important to transfusion services which wish to prepare human immunoglobulin (anti-diphtheria) both for therapeutic and for biological standard preparations. Adults immunised or boosted in the manner described by your correspondents may be a better source of antitoxin.

Soft tissue sarcomas.

Morphometric studies in veterinary cytology

Stained cytological specimens from twenty-four canine cutaneous soft tissue sarcomas and twenty-four canine spindle cell reactive proliferations were analyzed by computer-assisted nuclear morphometry. In each case, the nuclei of at least 100 neoplastic and reactive spindle cells were measured. The studied morphometric parameter was nuclear roundness (NR). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possibility of quantitative differentiation between canine cutaneous soft tissue sarcomas and reactive spindle cell proliferations. The mean values of NR were statistically significantly higher in soft tissue sarcomas than in non-neoplastic lesions. Statistical differences in NR were found between liposarcoma and haemangiopericytoma. Cytomorphometric differences between soft tissue sarcomas divided by histologic grade were not revealed. Differences, related to age, sex, breed or location of the lesions between non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions were also not observed. The results indicated that the morphometric parameter NR could be used as an additional tool for differentiation between canine cutaneous soft tissue sarcomas and reactive spindle cell proliferations. Z racunalnisko podprto analizo smo analizirali morfoloske znacilnosti jeder v 24 obarvanih prepratih kožnih mehkotkivnih sarkomov in 24 proliferacij reaktivnih vretenastih celic. Pri vsakem primeru smo analizirali vsaj 100 jeder in morfometrijsko dolocili okroglost jedra (OJ). Povprecna vrednost OJ je bila statisticno znacilno visja pri mehkotkivnih sarkomih kot pri neoplasticnih lezijah. Ugotovili smo tudi statisticno znacilne razlike v okroglosti jeder med liposarkomi in haemangiopericitomi. Med razlicnimi histoloskimi tipi mehkotkivnih sarkomov, starostjo, spolom, pasmo in lokacijo poskodbe pa ni bilo citomorfometricnih razlik. Rezultati nakazujejo, da je morfometricni parameter OJ dodaten pokazatelj za razlikovanje med pasjimi mehkotkivnimi sarkomi in proliferacijami reaktivnih vretenastih celic. Quantitative analysis in canine cutaneous soft tissue sarcomas and reactive spindle cell proliferations on cytological smears

Objective
To determine the feasibility and agreement of margin assessment by imprint cytology, shaved margin histopathology, and radial section histopathology in canine cutaneous and subcutaneous mast cell tumors (MCT) and soft tissue sarcomas (STS).

Study design
Prospective clinical study.

Sample population
Three hundred and forty margins from 72 excised tumors (52 MCT and 20 STS) in 54 client-owned dogs.

Methods
Imprint cytology samples were acquired by pressing glass slides to the cut surgical margin of the freshly excised surgical specimen. Shaved margin samples were obtained from the patient wound bed using a scalpel immediately prior to closure. Radial section histopathology was performed as part of routine histopathologic processing. All margins were assessed as either positive or negative for presence of tumor cells at the surgical margin. Agreement among methods was calculated using Fleiss Kappa coefficients and an association of method, margin direction, and tumor type with positive margin status was evaluated using a general linear mixed model.

Results
Positive margin detection rates differed for MCT (imprint cytology 21%, radial section histopathology 9%, and shaved margin histopathology 3%; P < .0001) but not for STS. Intermethod agreement was poor (Fleiss Kappa = 0.051 and 0.176 for MCT and STS, respectively). Margin direction did not influence margin status for either tumor type.

Conclusion
Imprint cytology and shaved margin histopathology are feasible, but their results are frequently disparate from routine radial section histopathology. Future studies are needed to evaluate the correlation of each method with local recurrence rates.

Shaved margin histopathology and imprint cytology for assessment of excision in canine mast cell tumors and soft tissue sarcomas.

Stained cytological specimens from 24 dogs with spontaneous soft tissue sarcomas [fibrosarcoma (n = 8), liposarcoma (n = 8) and haemangiopericytoma (n = 8)], and 24 dogs with reactive connective tissue lesions [granulation tissue (n = 12) and dermal fibrosis (n = 12)] were analysed by computer-assisted nuclear morphometry. The studied morphometric parameters were: mean nuclear area (MNA; µm(2)), mean nuclear perimeter (MNP; µm), mean nuclear diameter (MND mean; µm), minimum nuclear diameter (Dmin; µm) and maximum nuclear diameter (Dmax; µm). The study aimed to evaluate (1) possibility for quantitative differentiation of soft tissue sarcomas from reactive connective tissue lesions and (2) by using cytomorphometry, to differentiate the various histopathological soft tissue sarcomas subtypes in dogs. The mean values of all nuclear cytomorphometric parameters (except for Dmax) were statistically significantly higher in reactive connective tissue processes than in soft tissue sarcomas. At the same time, however, there were no considerable differences among the different sarcoma subtypes. The results demonstrated that the quantitative differentiation of reactive connective tissue processes from soft tissue sarcomas in dogs is possible, but the same was not true for the different canine soft tissue sarcoma subtypes. Further investigations on this topic are necessary for thorough explication of the role of quantitative morphology in the diagnostics of mesenchymal neoplasms and tumour-like fibrous lesions in dogs.
