Introduction to the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (Fdtd) Method for Electromagnetics

This paper presents a transmission-line modeling (TLM) algorithm, which is based upon unstructured tetrahedral meshes. In comparison with the conventional, usually Cartesian, scheme, the use of such meshes provides a significant enhancement in the flexibility and accuracy of the TLM simulations, permitting both smooth boundary approximations and the use of diversely sized elements in multiscale problems. A full theoretical development of the unstructured algorithm is presented for the first time and canonical problems are used to demonstrate the computational advantages available. Particular consideration is given to practical meshing constraints and the merging of adjacent tetrahedra into larger cells used to avoid the use of undesirably small time steps.

Transmission-line modeling (TLM) based upon unstructured tetrahedral meshes

We construct a parallel and explicit finite-element time-domain (FETD) algorithm for Maxwell's equations in simplicial meshes based on a mixed E- B discretization and a sparse approximation for the inverse mass matrix. The sparsity pattern of the approximate inverse is obtained from edge adjacency information, which is naturally encoded by the sparsity pattern of successive powers of the mass matrix. Each column of the approximate inverse is computed independently, allowing for different processors to be used with no communication costs and hence linear (ideal) speedup in parallel processors. The convergence of the approximate inverse matrix to the actual inverse (full) matrix is investigated numerically and shown to exhibit exponential convergence versus the density of the approximate inverse matrix. The resulting FETD time-stepping is explicit is the sense that it does not require a linear solve at every time step, akin to the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method.

Parallel and Explicit Finite-Element Time-Domain Method for Maxwell's Equations

Transmission-line modeling (TLM) is an established numerical simulation method for electromagnetics that has been employed in a wide variety of application areas. To date, TLM has been formulated primarily for structured (usually Cartesian) meshes. This paper presents and illustrates the application of a new TLM algorithm suitable for use with unstructured two-dimensional meshes based upon triangular elements.

Transmission-line modeling using unstructured triangular meshes

In this paper, two implicit finite-element time-domain (FETD) solutions of the Maxwell equations are presented. The first time-dependent formulation employs a time-integration method based on the alternating-direction implicit (ADI) method. The ADI method is directly applied to the time-dependent Maxwell curl equations in order to obtain an unconditionally stable FETD approach, unlike the conventional FETD method, which is conditionally stable. A numerical formulation for the 3-D ADI-FETD method is presented. For stability analysis of the proposed method, the amplification matrix is derived. Investigation of the proposed method formulation shows that it does not generally lead to a tri-diagonal system of equations. Therefore, the Crank-Nicolson FETD method is introduced as another alternative in order to obtain an unconditionally stable method. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods and are compared to those obtained using the conventional FETD method.

Alternating-Direction Implicit Formulation of the Finite-Element Time-Domain Method

In this paper, a sufficient test for the numerical stability of generalized grid finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) schemes is presented. It is shown that the projection operators of such schemes must be symmetric positive definite. Without this property, such schemes can exhibit late-time instabilities. The origin and the characteristics of these late-time instabilities are also uncovered. Based on this study, nonorthogonal grid FDTD schemes (NFDTD) and the generalized Yee (GY) methods are proposed that are numerically stable in the late time for quadrilateral prism elements, allowing these methods to be extended to problems requiring very long-time simulations. The study of numerical stability that is presented is very general and can be applied to most solutions of Maxwell's equations based on explicit time-domain schemes.
