The objective of this paper is to give a comprehensive introduction to applied cryptography with an engineer or computer scientist in mind. The emphasis is on the knowledge needed to create practical systems which supports integrity, confidentiality, or authenticity. Topics covered includes an introduction to the concepts in cryptography, attacks against cryptographic systems, key use and handling, random bit generation, encryption modes, and message authentication codes. Recommendations on algorithms and further reading is given in the end of the paper. This paper should make the reader able to build, understand and evaluate system descriptions and designs based on the cryptographic components described in the paper.

Strength of cryptographic cipher depends on the statistical performance of its generated keystream. Generation of high quality keystream is a challenging task, which decides the level of security offered by the cipher. A lot of key generation techniques based on linear feedback shift registers for stream ciphering have been suggested in the literature. In this paper, the features of one-dimensional chaotic systems are exploited to construct a PN sequence generator. The integration of chaotic Logistic maps and Cubic maps is done in novel manner to generate strong cryptographic sequence. The proposed system includes the preprocessing and quantization of the real-valued chaotic sequences. The statistical performance of the proposed generator is performed which ascertain that the generated PN sequence has noise-like characteristics. In addition, it is also examined that the proposed chaos-based generator has better statistical and encryption performance than the existing LFSR-based generator.

Chaos based PN sequence generator for cryptographic applications

Efficient random sequence generators are significant in the application areas of cryptographic stream cipher design, statistical sampling and simulation, direct spread spectrum, etc. A cryptographically efficient pseudo-random sequence should have the characteristics of high randomness and encryption effect. The statistical quality of pseudo-random sequences determines the strength of cryptographic system. The generation of pseudo-random sequences with high randomness and encryption effect is a key challenge. A sequence with poor randomness threatens the security of cryptographic system. In this paper, the features and strengths of chaos and neural network are combined to design a novel pseudo-random binary sequence generator for cryptographic applications. The statistical performance of the proposed chaotic neural network based pseudo random sequence generator is examined against the NIST SP800-22 randomness tests and multimedia image encryption. The results of investigations are promising and depict its relevance for cryptographic applications.

A Chaotic Neural Network Based Cryptographic Pseudo-Random Sequence Design

With the utmost application of wireless network and internet has actuated substantial demands for information security and data concealment. However, wireless systems are more susceptible to illegitimate access and eavesdropping. RC5 has a variable parameters of word size, length of secret key and number of rounds. Ronald Rivest suggested the RC5 algorithm with 12 numbers of rounds for better encryption. In this paper, the proposed work is that if the value for the rounds in RC5 be a prime number then the security level of the cipher is more, as compared to the higher value of rounds up to next prime number. By the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) suite, different tests of RC5 algorithm are performed having same data length and key but for different number of rounds and the result for prime number of round is equated with composite number of rounds and result obtained justify that RC5 for prime number of rounds provide better security level than a result drawn by a composite number of round.

GSM is widely used cellular standard in the world GSM uses A5/x algorithms to secure the information sent over the air interface A5/1 is a strong encryption algorithm among all A5/x algorithms However, recent studies show that it has security flaws in its architecture, owing to which it is susceptible to several cryptographic attacks This paper presents an enhanced scheme of A5/1 algorithm to improve the level of security provided by the GSM Proposed scheme is analyzed against some cryptographic attacks and it is shown that the scheme provides more security by offering more resistance to correlation attack, algebraic attack and linear approximation attack Moreover, the linear complexity of the enhanced cipher is quite large and makes the cipher to withstand the Berleykamp-Massey attack It is also shown that the proposed scheme is little faster with respect to the output rate Both the designs are coded in VHDL andP synthesized on FPGA device
