Droplet deposition apparatus comprising an array of fluid chambers defined by a pair of opposing chamber walls, and in fluid communication with a nozzle for droplet ejection therefrom; a cover member is joined to the edges of the chamber walls and thus seals one side of the chambers. This paper surveys current technology and research in the area of digital color imaging. In order to establish the background and lay down terminology, fundamental concepts of color perception and measurement are first presented using vector-space notation and terminology. Present-day color recording and reproduction systems are reviewed along with the common mathematical models used for representing these devices. Algorithms for processing color images for display and communication are surveyed, and a forecast of research trends is attempted. An extensive bibliography is provided.

A pagewidth thermal ink jet printhead for an ink jet printer is disclosed. The printhead is of the type assembled from fully functional roofshooter type printhead subunits (26A) fixedly mounted on the surface of one side (67) of a structural bar (62). A passageway (64) is formed adjacent the bar side surface containing the printhead subunits with openings (65) provided between the passageway and the ink inlets of the printhead subunits, mounted thereon so that ink supplied to the passageway in the bar will maintain the individual subunits full of ink. The size of the printing zone for color printing is minimized because the roofshooter printhead subunits are mounted on one edge of the structural bar and may be stacked one on top of the other without need to provide space for the printhead subunits and/or ink supply lines. In addition, the structural bar thickness (T) enables the bar to be massive enough to prevent warping because of printhead operating temperatures.

A high-quality image is printed with reduced bleeding in colors that may appear at a boundary between a black image and a color image. A head for ejecting black ink and a head for ejecting color ink perform three times of scanning while feeding is carried out therebetween for moving the printing medium by four pitches of ejection openings arranged on the heads, different ejection openings are caused to correspond to a scanning area, which corresponds to the four pitches, and multi-pass printing is performed to complete printing on the area. The black head completes printing of the black image, and then, the color head completes printing of the color image adjacent to the black image. The arrangement of ejection openings is determined so that between last scanning for completing printing of the black image and the first scanning for printing of the color image, scanning with no performing printing exists.

Modular partial bars include a substrate bar having a length and a plurality of printhead subunits attached to only one side of the substrate bar, each printhead subunit being spaced from an adjacent printhead subunit. These modular partial bars are used as building blocks to form full width staggered array printheads. When the printhead subunits are arranged on each substrate bar so that two substrate bars are capable of forming a full width staggered array printhead, each modular partial bar is referred to as a modular half bar. One modular half bar can be stacked on another modular half bar any number of ways. For example, two half bars can be stacked with their printhead subunit containing sides facing the same direction, away from one another or towards one another. When two half bars are stacked with their printhead subunit containing sides facing in the same direction, an ink manifold for supplying ink to the printhead subunits of the lower half bar can be provided in the substrate of the upper half bar. When half bars are arranged with their printhead subunit containing sides facing each other, a common ink supply manifold can be used to supply ink to all of the printhead subunits in the full width staggered array, thus eliminating the need for two separate ink supply manifolds. By modifying the construction of the channel plates typically used to form the printhead subunits, the need for a separate ink supply manifold can be entirely eliminated.

Modular partial bars and full width array printheads fabricated from modular partial bars

A multi-color ink-jet printer in which a first partial image is created on a recording medium, and then a second partial image is created on the same recording medium after the first partial image is substantially dried. The first partial image comprises an ink which dries at a slower rate than that of the second partial image. In one embodiment, means are provided for heating the recording medium prior to the creation of the second partial image.

Thermal ink-jet printing with fast- and slow-drying inks

An ink jet printer is configured in a hybrid architecture wherein a full width printbar is combined with a partial width color scanning assembly to provide the capability of selectively printing in black only or, alternately, of producing color prints by operating the color scan assembly exclusively. The cost of the hybrid system, when compared to a full width color system using four full width printbars, is greatly reduced. Throughput time is reduced by providing the control circuitry for distinguishing between black only and color operation and selectively controlling the printer mode of operation. The hybrid architecture is particularly useful in a LAN system since it provides a mechanism for balancing the relative color versus black page decomposition speed limitations. Also, the hybrid architecture enables a relatively simple implementation of a checkerboarding technique to suppress banding in output prints.

Hybrid ink jet printer

A staggered array printhead, recording medium support and capping and/or maintenance assembly for use in an ink jet printer is described. Capping and maintenance of printhead sub-units of the staggered array is performed by self-positioning and aligning members located on a capping and/or maintenance member which is movably positioned on one side of a recording medium support. The printhead is located on an opposite side of the recording medium support, staggered openings being provided in the support to enable contact between the capping and/or maintenance members and front faces of the printhead subunits. Heat management of the printhead is provided by an ink manifold positioned over the printhead subunits. The manifold includes fingered portions which extend into spaces between the subunits. Assembly of a staggered array printhead is facilitated by the use of a high precision fixture having recesses for the receipt of printhead subunits.
