The vision encompassing Smart and Software-defined Buildings (SSDB) is becoming more popular and its implementation is now more accessible due to the widespread adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure. Some of the most important applications sustaining this vision are energy management, environmental comfort, safety and surveillance. This paper surveys IoT and SSB technologies and their cooperation towards the realization of smart spaces. We propose a fourlayer reference architecture and we organize related concepts around it. This conceptual frame is useful to identify the current literature on the topic and to connect the dots into a coherent vision of the future of residential and commercial buildings.

A Reference Architecture for Smart and Software-Defined Buildings

A lot of people have neuromuscular problems that affect their lives leading them to lose an important degree of autonomy in their daily activities. When their disabilities do not involve speech disorders, robotic wheelchairs with voice assistant technologies may provide appropriate human–robot interaction for them. Given the wide improvement and diffusion of Google Assistant, Apple’s Siri, Microsoft’s Cortana, Amazon’s Alexa, etc., such voice assistant technologies can be fully integrated and exploited in robotic wheelchairs to improve the quality of life of affected people. As such, in this paper, we propose an abstraction layer capable of providing appropriate human–robot interaction. It allows use of voice assistant tools that may trigger different kinds of applications for the interaction between the robot and the user. Furthermore, we propose a use case as a possible instance of the considered abstraction layer. Within the use case, we chose existing tools for each component of the proposed abstraction layer. For example, Google Assistant was employed as a voice assistant tool; its functions and APIs were leveraged for some of the applications we deployed. On top of the use case thus defined, we created several applications that we detail and discuss. The benefit of the resulting Human–Computer Interaction is therefore two-fold: on the one hand, the user may interact with any of the developed applications; on the other hand, the user can also rely on voice assistant tools to receive answers in the open domain when the statement of the user does not enable any of the applications of the robot. An evaluation of the presented instance was carried out using the Software Architecture Analysis Method, whereas the user experience was evaluated through ad-hoc questionnaires. Our proposed abstraction layer is general and can be instantiated on any robotic platform including robotic wheelchairs.

An Abstraction Layer Exploiting Voice Assistant Technologies for Effective Human—Robot Interaction

In this chapter we offer an overview of microservices providing the introductory information that a reader should know before continuing reading this book. We introduce the idea of microservices and we discuss some of the current research challenges and real-life software applications where the microservice paradigm plays a key role. We have identified a set of areas where both researcher and developer can propose new ideas and technical solutions.

A Reference Architecture for Smart and Software-defined Buildings

Background: The early stage of defect prediction in the software development life cycle can reduce testing effort and ensure the quality of software. Due to the lack of historical data within the same project, Cross-Project Defect Prediction (CPDP) has become a popular research topic among researchers. CPDP trained classifiers based on labeled data sets of one project to predict fault in another project. Goals: Software Defect Prediction (SDP) data sets consist of manually designed static features, which are software metrics. In CPDP, source and target project data divergence is the major challenge in achieving high performance. In this paper, we propose a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based data transformation to reduce data divergence between source and target projects. Method: We apply the Generative Adversarial Method where label data sets are choosing as real data, while target data sets are choosing as fake data. The Discriminator tries to measure the perfection of domain adaptation through loss function. Through the generator, target data sets try to adapt the source project domain and, finally, apply machine learning classifier (i.e., Naive Bayes) to classify faulty modules. Results: Our result shows that it is possible to predict defects based on the Generative Adversarial Method. Our model performs quite well in a cross-project environment when we choose JDT as a target data sets. However, all chosen data sets are facing a large class imbalance problem which affects the performance of our model.

Generative Adversarial Network-based Cross-Project Fault Prediction.

Nowadays Digital Personal Assistants (DPA) become more and more popular. DPAs help to increase quality of life especially for elderly or disabled people. In this paper we develop an open source DPA and smart home system as a 3- rd party extension to show the functionality of the assistant. The system is designed to use the DPA as a learning platform for engineers to provide them with the opportunity to create and test their own hypothesis. The DPA is able to recognize users' commands in natural language and transform it to the set of machine commands that can be used to control different 3rdparty application. We use smart home system as an example of such 3rd-party. We demonstrate that the system is able to control home appliances, like lights, or to display information about the current state of the home, like temperature, through a dialogue between a user and the Digital Personal Assistant.

Open Source Platform Digital Personal Assistant

For classification task involving a large number of classes, a decrease in recognition accuracy is observed for visually similar classes. We believe that forcing the model to learn appropriate features separately for each set of similar classes could improve classification performance. To justify our idea, we tried to improve classification performance by employing class hierarchy, which reflects visual similarities in data. More specifically, we used and compared two kinds of hierarchies to enhance classification performance of the model: (i) a hierarchy defined by experts (H-E), and (ii) a hierarchy created from performance results of a flat classifier and using DBScan clustering method (H-C). Moreover, we created a classification model that efficiently utilizes these hierarchies to learn appropriate features at different levels of the hierarchy. We evaluated the performance of the model on CIFAR-100 benchmark. Our results demonstrate that the hierarchical classification under H-C outperforms both H-E and the flat classifier.
