The Impact of Fair Trade Certification for Coffee Farmers in Peru

The production and distribution of food are among the hot topics debated in the context of sustainable development. Short food supply chains (SFSCs) are now widely believed to be more sustainable in comparison to mass food delivery systems. To date, very little quantitative evidence exists on the impacts of various types of food supply chains. Using a cross-sectional quantitative approach, this study assesses the sustainability of distribution channels in short and long food supply chains based on 208 food producers across seven countries: France, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam. Ten distribution channel types are used in this study. To provide a comprehensive sustainability assessment, a set of economic, social, and environmental indicators are applied. Indicators commonly used in the literature are used, supported by original indicators constructed specifically for the present study. In total, 486 chains are examined and the study confirms that individual producers participate simultaneously in several, short and long chains. Participation in SFSCs is beneficial for producers from an economic perspective. SFSCs allow producers to capture a large proportion of margin otherwise absorbed by different intermediaries. It appears, however, that ’longer’ supply channels generate lower environmental impacts per unit of production when measured in terms of food miles and carbon footprint. Finally, ambiguous results are found regarding social dimension, with significant differences across types of chains.

Measuring the Economic, Environmental, and Social Sustainability of Short Food Supply Chains

The logistics of the short food supply chain: A literature review

Short food supply chains (SFSCs) are increasingly garnering attention in food systems research, owing to their rising popularity among consumers, producers and policy-makers in the last few decades. Written with the aim to identify research gaps for the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, this literature review provides a state of play of the definition and characterisation of SFSCs, and of their sustainability. Drawing on hypotheses about SFSC sustainability elaborated in an expert network in France, this review summarises a wide range of papers from various disciplines in the SFSC literature, written in English or French, while specifically highlighting the empirical results derived from European projects. Though the literature tends to generally agree on the social benefits of SFSCs, their economic and environmental impacts typically elicit more heterogeneous outcomes, while their health/nutrition and governance dimensions remain under-explored. Based on this review, recommendations for a future research and innovation programme are outlined, addressing the contribution of SFSCs to agrifood system transition and resilience in the current context of the Covid-19 crisis and of the Green New Deal objectives.

Alternative food networks as “market agencements”: Exploring their multiple hybridities

In the literature, Fair Trade (FT) goods areusually associated with other products differentiated byprocess attributes such as organic food, genetically mod-ified (GM) food or child labour-free clothing. All of theseproducts are regarded ascredence goods. This classificationrefers to the simplified definition of credence goods,which describes product attributes which consumerscannot evaluate, even after having consumed the good.Focusing on the characteristics of FT goods, this articleproposes a reassessment of the link between FT goods andcredence properties as defined by Darby and Karni. Wefirst demonstrate that (1) the usual classification masksimportant particularities of FT goods compared to othergoods with process attributes and (2) the full definition ofcredence goods may even provide a better description ofthe quality of FT goods. However – and this is our secondtheoretical contribution – the lack of consensus amongexperts concerning FT standards and their level of effi-ciency encourage us to consider FT goods asindeterminategoodsas defined by Lupton. This result leads us to suggesta new typology of product attributes summarized in aninnovative diagram. It sheds light on how competitionbetween the different FT approaches works and why theFT market is still confined to a niche, if not threatenedwith collapse. We mainly illustrate our theoretical analysiswith observations relating to the French FT market andinstitutions.

Les ressorts de l'engagement dans une forme particulière d'échange collaboratif entre producteur et consommateurs : les AMAP

Dans un contexte ou les logos apposes sur les emballages des produits alimentaires se multiplient, la presente recherche s’interesse a l’influence de l’accroissement progressif du nombre de labels sur la valorisation du produit. Trois etudes empiriques ont permis de mesurer l’influence de l’addition des labels de qualite Agriculture Biologique, Fairtrade et Label Rouge sur le consentement a payer de 519 consommateurs francais de miel. Elles mettent notamment en evidence un effet de complementarite, dominant souvent les effets de redondance et de surcharge informationnelle. Cet effet differe selon les caracteristiques et le nombre des labels associes et est fonction de la confiance accordee a ces labels. Les enseignements de cette recherche incitent les producteurs a associer des labels sur les emballages, lorsque ceux-ci sont concordants en termes de notoriete mais complementaires en termes d’attributs.

The objective of this article is to assess the impact of a gradual increase in the number of labels appearing on some food products on consumer valuation of the given product. Three empirical studies were designed to measure the effects of using labels to differentiate food products (Organic Farming, Fairtrade, and Label Rouge (a French label that concerns organoleptic quality)) on the willingness of 519 French consumers of honey to pay a premium. These three studies shed light on a complementarity effect, often dominating the effects of redundancy and information overload. This effect differed depending on the features and the number of associated labels, and was influenced by consumer trust in the labels. These findings should encourage producers to associate their products with labels on packaging when they are consistent in terms of reputation but complementary in terms of attributes.
