Population in Turkey is increasing every year. One of the cities whose population increases every year is Eskisehir. The increase in the population of the city also increases the use of vehicles. The increase in the number of vehicles and drivers causes problems in traffic. One of these problems that arise is traffic accidents. With this study, traffic accidents that occurred in two central districts of Eskisehir were examined temporally and spatially. The reasons for choosing the two central districts are that the population and traffic flow are concentrated in this area. Data used in the research; traffic accident for 2016-2017 and land use data for 2012. The method was chosen according to the purpose of the study. Two tools are used in ArcGIS to identify analyzes and findings. These are point density and total event tools. The purpose of using these tools is to reveal the temporal and spatial connections of traffic accidents. Traffic accidents within the temporal connections are examined in years, seasons, months, days of the week and hours. Within the spatial connections, traffic accidents on the district, neighborhood and highways were examined. As a result of the analyzes, traffic accidents; in which areas it is concentrated in terms of years, in which seasons it has increased, in which months it has increased, on which days of the week it has increased, its distribution by hours, distribution by districts, distribution by neighborhoods, distribution by roads and black spots are determined.

Examining the Impact on Road Safety Performance of Socioeconomic Variables in Turkey

The number of vehicles has steadily increased in parallel with the population in Turkey. Depending on the increasing number of vehicles, the number of accidents occurred in traffic also has increased. Traffic accidents can result in serious traumas, injuries and deaths as well as their material and moral consequences. And the fact that highway transportation is commonly preferred in Turkey, has been a major factor in the increase of traffic accidents. The total number of traffic accidents that occurred between the years of 2013-2017 in Turkey is 5.530.090, 1.497.353 of these accidents resulted in injury and death. Various studies have been conducted to reduce traffic accidents in the world and Turkey, but they could not be much effective in reducing accidents. Geographic Information System (GIS) is widely used in the analysis, reduction and decision-making process of traffic accidents. The use of GIS in traffic accidents is of great importance for the identification of accident hotspots, blind spots and changes in the intensity of accidents over the years. In this study, traffic accident data belonging to the city center of Viransehir (Sanliurfa) between 2013 and 2017 were used. The accident data were obtained from the Ministry of Interior Traffic Inspection Department. Traffic accidents occurred in the study area were analyzed according to month, day and time distinction as well as the factors like day and night, road condition, weather condition and death or injury of the accident. The traffic accidents occurred between the years 2013-2017 were analyzed and the accident blind spots were determined.

Izmir is one of the biggest cities in terms of population in Turkey. As time passes, the increase in the population leads to an increase in the number of vehicles. The increase in vehicle use also increases the number of traffic accidents in the city. The research was carried out with the aim of revealing the connections of traffic accidents with daily activity areas and contributing to their reduction. Eleven central districts of Izmir were chosen as the study area. The reason for choosing this region is that daily activity areas concentrate on this area and most of the population in Izmir city is living in this area. From 2010 to 2014 traffic accidents’ data was used in the study. In addition, another data is point data which are obtained from daily activity areas Izmir Metropolitan City Guide. Two different analyzes were performed. These are proximity and total event analyses. The purpose of the analysis is to determine the connections of traffic accidents to the daily activity areas. As a result of analyzes traffic accidents have connections with daily activity areas such as education and worship facilities, transportation areas, public and state establishments and facilities.

Summary Turkey is among the ten countries constituting almost half of the global traffic accident deaths. As regard to their frequencies, health and economic outcomes, traffic accidents must have a priority in public health agenda. From the epidemiological perspective, within the vehicle, person and the environment components; person (driver, occupant, pedestrian) (99.12 %) is the most responsible component for the traffic accidents. According to the accident statistics, drivers have the biggest defect share with a 95 % ratio. Main components of the driver defect are; speed, alcohol and substance use, sleep and fatigue, not using safety belt, child car seat and helmet. Related legislation has been developed in Turkey but is not applied as it should be.The United Nations has developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 to decrease the traffic accidents and burden of disease all over the world and especially in the low and middle-income countries. The objective of this article is to draw attention to the problem of road safety and traffic accidents in Turkey.
