After offering a systems perspective that considers a diversity of job-related and personal factors, we discuss the determinants and impacts of health care work climates and how staff morale and performance can influence the treatment milieu and quality of patient care. We also describe the physical features, organizational structure and policies, and suprapersonal and task factors that help to shape health care work climates. We then review research on the connections between work climate and staff morale and performance, the interplay of work climate factors, and the role of personal factors in these relationships. Finally, we orovide some ideas about how to improve health care work settings and focus on some promising new research directions.

Evaluating health care work settings: A holistic conceptual framework

The impact of perceived work environment on job satisfaction of hospital staff nurses.

This paper presents the findings of a systematic review of the current evidence for the effectiveness of stress management interventions for those working in the mental health field. Research articles from 1966 to 2000 which reported studies undertaken in the United Kingdom and which specifically identified participants as mental health workers were included in the review. Studies from other European countries and from the USA were examined as potential models of good practice. The review demonstrated that a great deal is known about the sources of stress at work, about how to measure them and about their interaction and impact on a range of outcome indicators. What was found to be lacking was a translation of these results into practice, into research that assessed the impact of interventions that attempted to moderate, minimize or eliminate some of these stressors. Three papers were retrieved which reported intervention strategies for workers classified as working within the mental health arena.

Stress management for mental health professionals: a review of effective techniques

Burnout is inherent in many health care professions. This research investigation was conducted to determine if burnout existed at significant levels and if a relationship between burnout, work environment factors and demographic characteristics existed among a group of psychiatric occupational therapy personnel. The study design was a descriptive survey format utilizing mailed questionnaires. Eighty-nine respondents completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Work Environment Scale and a demographic questionnaire. A series of regression analyses were performed. The results indicated that the following were significant predictors of burnout: work involvement, a large percentage of clients on one's caseload diagnosed with schizophrenia, work pressure, age, income level, the length of time working in psychiatric occupational therapy, caseload size and the amount of overtime performed on a weekly basis. Predictors of burnout for psychiatric occupational therapy personnel.

This study aims at determining the relationship between occupational burnout and personality traits of Turkish EFL teachers. Occupational burnout has been studied from numerous perspectives with a wide range of professions including teachers. Many parameters in the burnout process like age, poor leadership and stressful environments have been mostly agreed on. However, the related literature lacks studies concerning language teachers. Furthermore, the relationship between occupational burnout and personality traits of language teachers has also been ignored. Taking this point into account, Turkish teachers of English working in a certain district in Turkey are the focal point of the study, and 224 of them participated in it. The data was collected via two questionnaires. Occupational burnout was measured with Maslach Burnout Inventory and the personality traits of the participants were measured with the Five-factor Personality Inventory. Relevant issues were also analyzed through a qualitative approach. No dominant personality trait could be detected among the participants. The results also showed that occupational burnout exists among the participants but due to different factors than being questioned. A positive correlation between neuroticism and occupational burnout is also among the findings of the current study. Keywords : EFL teachers, burnout, personality traits

The Relationship between Occupational Burnout and Personality Traits of Turkish EFL Teachers

The relationship between staff perceptions of work environment and patient/staff ratios was studied at a state psychiatric hospital. Staff in three separate admission units indicated their perceptions by completing the Work Environment Scale. Significant differences in subscale scores were found among the units and correlated with staff/patient ratios. Hypothesized explanations for these findings are presented along with responses made, subsequent to the study, by the hospital.
