Summary • Numerous field studies have measured mycorrhizal dynamics under additions of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), or atmospheric CO 2 to test the hypothesis that plants should invest in mycorrhizal fungi when soil nutrients are limiting. • Here meta-analyses were used to integrate nutrient responses across independent field-based studies. Responses were compared between ecto- and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and among fertilizer types, methods of measurement, biomes, and lead investigators. Relationships between degree of response and study length, fertilization rates, total amounts of nutrients applied, and numbers of replicates were also tested. • Across studies, mycorrhizal abundance decreased 15% under N fertilization and 32% under P fertilization. Elevated CO 2 elicited a 47% increase. Nitrogen effects varied significantly among studies, and P effects varied significantly among lead investigators. Most other factors did not affect mycorrhizal responses. • These results support the plant investment hypothesis, and suggest that global standing stocks of mycorrhizal fungi may increase substantially under elevated CO 2 but decline moderately under P additions. Effects of N deposition may be difficult to predict for individual ecosystems, with a slightly negative influence overall.

A meta‐analysis of mycorrhizal responses to nitrogen, phosphorus, and atmospheric CO2 in field studies

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and organic farming

Nitrogen isotopic studies have potential to shed light on the structure of ancient ecosystems, agropastoral regimes, and human-environment interactions. Until relatively recently, however, little attention was paid to the complexities of nitrogen transformations in ancient plant-soil systems and their potential impact on plant and animal tissue nitrogen isotopic compositions. This paper discusses the importance of understanding nitrogen dynamics in ancient contexts, and highlights several key areas of archaeology where a more detailed understanding of these processes may enable us to answer some fundamental questions. This paper explores two larger themes that are prominent in archaeological studies using stable nitrogen isotope analysis: (1) agricultural practices (use of animal fertilizers, burning of vegetation or shifting cultivation, and tillage) and (2) animal domestication and husbandry (grazing intensity/stocking rate and the foddering of domestic animals with cultigens). The paucity of plant material in ancient deposits necessitates that these issues are addressed primarily through the isotopic analysis of skeletal material rather than the plants themselves, but the interpretation of these data hinges on a thorough understanding of the underlying biogeochemical processes in plant-soil systems. Building on studies conducted in modern ecosystems and under controlled conditions, these processes are reviewed, and their relevance discussed for ancient contexts.

Complexities of nitrogen isotope biogeochemistry in plant-soil systems: implications for the study of ancient agricultural and animal management practices.

Plants require adequate P from the very early stages of growth for optimum crop production. Phosphorus supply to the crop is affected by soil P, P fertilizer management and by soil and environmental conditions influencing P phytoavailability and root growth. Phosphorus uptake in many crops is improved by associations with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Cropping system and long-term input of P through fertilizers and manures can influence the amount and phytoavailability of P in the system and the development of mycorrhizal associations. Optimum yield potential requires an adequate P supply to the crop from the soil or from P additions. Where early-season P supply is low, P fertilization may improve P nutrition and crop yield potential. Alternately, under low-P conditions, encouragement of arbuscular mycorrhizal associations may enhance P uptake by crops early in the growing season, improving crop yield potential and replacing starter fertilizer P applications. Soil and fertilizer phosphorus: Effects on plant P supply and mycorrhizal development

Based on biomass size, the contribution of fungi to nutrient cycling and soil properties is in general more important in natural ecosystems than in agro-ecosystems. Therefore, we expect an increase of fungal biomass after cessation of cultivation to values of a natural ecosystem. However, so far, information on fungal dynamics in ex-arable land is limited. We quantified fungal biomass in a chronosequence of 26 ex-arable fields in the Netherlands ranging from 1–34 years of abandonment. Agricultural lands and semi-natural heathlands were included as reference sites for initial and final stages of succession, respectively. Fungal biomass values were low at the start of land abandonment and increased during the first 2 years after abandonment. After this initial increase of fungal biomass no further increase was apparent, neither did we find any relations with time since abandonment and changes in soil acidity, organic matter content or organic matter quality (quantity of recalcitrant C and C:N ratio). Therefore, we conclude that the initial increase of fungal biomass is caused by stopping agricultural management activities. A phase of stabilization occurs for at least three decades in which the size of the fungal biomass did not change significantly. We observed much higher values for fungal biomass, total and recalcitrant carbon in the heathland sites. We propose that a change in abiotic soil properties is a prerequisite for further increase of fungal biomass towards levels of representative heathlands.

Fungal biomass development in a chronosequence of land abandonment

The hypothesis of this study was that cumulative P fertilization decreases the contribution of arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) to crop growth and nutrient uptake in Northern European field conditions. The modes of action of P fertilization were evaluated through effects on mycorrhization, crop dependence on AM, and AM fungal (AMF) community. Field studies were carried out within long-term experiments on soils with low and intermediate initial content of extractable P, where no P fertilization and 45 kg ha−1 a−1 P were applied for 20 years. AM effectiveness in terms of growth and nutrient uptake of flax, red clover and barley, percentage root length colonized by AMF, P response of flax, and spore densities and species composition of the AMF communities, were assessed. In the soil with low initial P supply, cumulative P fertilization decreased AM contribution to crop growth and nutrient uptake. The higher AM effectiveness in soil with no added P compensated the cumulative P fertilization (soil PH2O 2.5 v. 9.5 mg kg−1) for flax, but not completely for clover. In contrast, barley obtained no benefit from AM at harvest and only a slight benefit from cumulated P. In the soil with intermediate initial P supply, AM reduced growth of flax and barley, especially with no added P, and no response to AM was obtained on clover due to retarded mycorrhization. Cumulative P fertilization reduced yield losses of flax by AM (PH2O 18.8 v. 5.4 mg kg−1), because fertilization inhibited mycorrhization. In both soils, root colonization and spore density were decreased by cumulative P fertilization, but no changes in AMF species composition were observed.

The availability of phosphorus to plants was estimated by a new method based on the diffusion of P from a thin layer of water-saturated stationary soil to a disc of iron oxide coated filter paper. Twenty-one acid Finnish soil samples were tested using four modifications of the method which differed in the duration of the diffusion time and in the thickness of the soil layer. The new diffusion tests were compared with other soil P testing methods and evaluated as indicators of the availability of P to pot-grown barley and oats. Close linear correlations were found between the initial (18 or 42 h) P diffusion rate and the water extractable P contents determined at the extraction ratios of 1:10 and 1:60, respectively (r=0.97–0.99). The amounts of P obtained by the new method were small when the diffusion time was short, but after prolonged diffusion (1 week) the test values were close to the amounts of P taken up by plants. The relationships of plant yield and P uptake with soil P test values were affected by soil acidity. Although the original soil P test values were significantly correlated, the accuracy of all methods drastically improved when the interfering effect of soil acidity was taken into account using a simple pH-correction model. The correlation coefficients (r) between the test values of diffusible P in soil and the uptake of P by plants increased up to 0.97.
