Fused Deposition Modelling: Current Status, Methodology, Applications and Future Prospects

This paper presents a comprehensive review of the literature for fabricating PDMS microfluidic devices by employing additive manufacturing (AM) processes. AM processes for PDMS microfluidic devices are first classified into (i) the direct printing approach and (ii) the indirect printing approach. The scope of the review covers both approaches, though the focus is on the printed mold approach, which is a kind of the so-called replica mold approach or soft lithography approach. This approach is, in essence, casting PDMS materials with the mold which is printed. The paper also includes our on-going effort on the printed mold approach. The main contribution of this paper is the identification of knowledge gaps and elaboration of future work toward closing the knowledge gaps in fabrication of PDMS microfluidic devices. The second contribution is the development of a novel classification of AM processes from design thinking. There is also a contribution in clarifying confusion in the literature regarding the soft lithography technique; this classification has provided a consistent ontology in the sub-field of the fabrication of microfluidic devices involving AM processes.

The Additive Manufacturing Approach to Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) Microfluidic Devices: Review and Future Directions

Due to the availability of materials and low cost for production, fused deposition modeling is becoming the most widely used additive manufacturing (AM) technology. However, the reasonable choice of process parameters for FDM is a significant task that directly affects the performance of the printed part. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the influences of various process parameters on the quality characteristics of the components. The objectives of this study are to thoroughly review the current state of research that characterizes, estimates the effects of process parameters on mechanical properties, and summarizes the conclusions of existing works. In addition, some general issues of the presented research are summarized, and the need for future development is also emphasized. Finally, the research proposes several areas that deserve further study in this field.

A Survey of the Influence of Process Parameters on Mechanical Properties of Fused Deposition Modeling Parts

Bone scaffolds should have good biocompatibility and mechanical and biological properties, which are primarily by the material design, porous structure, and preparation process. In this study, we proposed polylactic acid (PLA) as the base material, graphene oxide (GO) as an enhancing filler, triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) as a porous structure, and fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing as a preparation technology to develop a TPMS structural PLA/GO scaffold and evaluate their porous structures, mechanical properties, and biological properties towards bone tissue engineering. Firstly, the influence of the FDM 3D printing process parameters on the forming quality and mechanical properties of PLA was studied by orthogonal experimental design, based on which the process parameters were optimized. Then, GO was composited with PLA, and PLA/GO nanocomposites were prepared by FDM. The mechanical tests showed that GO can effectively improve the tensile and compression strength of PLA; only by adding 0.1% GO the tensile and compression modulus was increased by 35.6% and 35.8%, respectively. Then, TPMS structural (Schwarz-P, Gyroid) scaffold models were designed and TPMS structural PLA/0.1%GO nanocomposite scaffolds were prepared by FDM. The compression test showed that the TPMS structural scaffolds had higher compression strength than the Grid structure; This was owing to the fact that the continuous curved structure of TMPS alleviated stress concentration and had a more uniform stress bearing. Moreover, cell culture indicated bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) showed better adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation behaviors on the TPMS structural scaffolds as the continuous surface structure of TPMS had better connectivity and larger specific surface area. These results suggest that the TPMS structural PLA/GO scaffold has potential application in bone repair. This article suggests the feasibility of co-designing the material, structure, and technology for achieving the good comprehensive performance of polymer bone scaffolds. 

3D printed TPMS structural PLA/GO scaffold: Process parameter optimization, porous structure, mechanical and biological properties.

Abstract In recent years, there has been a logarithmic interest in three-dimensional printing technologies. This technique has made it possible to make more intricately shaped parts of superior quality, allowing for use in a variety of industries, including aircraft, automobiles, and ships. This study characterized the materials and assessed the mechanical features of PLA, PETG, and ABS materials generated at various raster angles. The strength ratios of the various materials have been found to fluctuate when the raster angles change. The PLA parts created at a picture raster angle of 45° had the maximum tensile strength. ABS material created with a picture raster angle of 45° has been shown to have the best energy absorption, and PLA material made with a raster angle of 45° has the best performance compressive strength. When bending strength was evaluated, it was found that samples of ABS made with a raster angle of 0–90° had the greatest value. The SEM micrographs were obtained, and the tensile test was used to examine the fracture behavior of the materials. As a result, it has been found that materials created using various raster angles can have various strength values from one another.

Experimental investigation of mechanical properties of PLA, ABS, and PETG 3-d printing materials using fused deposition modeling technique

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is one of the most often-used technologies in additive manufacturing. Several materials are used with this technology, such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA), which is most commonly applied. The mechanical properties of 3D-printed parts depend on the process parameters. This is why, in this study, three-point bending tests were carried out to characterize the influence of build orientation, layer thickness, printing temperature and printing speed on the mechanical properties of PLA samples. Not only the process parameters may affect the mechanical properties, but heat after-treatment also has an influence on them. For this reason, additional samples were printed with optimal process parameters and characterized after pure heat treatment as well as after deformation at a temperature above the glass transition temperature, cooling with applied deformation, and subsequent recovery under heat treatment. These findings are planned to be used in a future study on finger orthoses that could either be printed according to shape or in a flat shape and afterwards heated and bent around the finger.

Mechanical Properties of FDM Printed PLA Parts before and after Thermal Treatment.

Myoelectric signals can be used to control prostheses or exoskeletons as well as robots, i.e., devices assisting the user or replacing a missing part of the body. A typical application of myoelectric prostheses is the human hand. Here, the development of a low-cost myoelectric thumb is described, which can either be used as an additional finger or as prosthesis. Combining 3D printing with inexpensive sensors, electrodes, and electronics, the recent project offers the possibility to produce an individualized myoelectric thumb at significantly lower costs than commercial myoelectric prostheses. Alternatively, a second thumb may be supportive for people with special manual tasks. These possibilities are discussed together with disadvantages of a second thumb and drawbacks of the low-cost solution in terms of mechanical properties and wearing comfort. The study shows that a low-cost customized myoelectric thumb can be produced in this way, but further research on controlling the thumb as well as improving motorization are necessarily to make it fully usable for daily tasks.
