Vehicle system dynamics integration encompasses interdisciplinary challenges innovations in various aspects related to vehicle system/subsystems/components dynamic characteristics, modeling and validation, vehicle dynamics state measurement and estimation, vehicle/chassis control systems, coordination of power management and dynamics/stability control, etc [1-4]. These are becoming more critical due to the increasing concern and rapid development in electric and hybrid vehicles, which tend to exhibit different vehicle dynamics/stability and control characteristics when compared to conventional vehicles.

This paper presents recent progress in the field of thermoacoustic combustion instabilities in propulsion engines such as rockets or gas turbines. Combustion instabilities have been studied for more than a century in simple laminar configurations as well as in laboratory-scale turbulent flames. These instabilities are also encountered in real engines but new mechanisms appear in these systems because of obvious differences with academic burners: larger Reynolds numbers, higher pressures and power densities, multiple inlet systems, complex fuels. Other differences are more subtle: real engines often feature specific unstable modes such as azimuthal instabilities in gas turbines or transverse modes in rocket chambers. Hydrodynamic instability modes can also differ as well as the combustion regimes, which can require very different simulation models. The integration of chambers in real engines implies that compressor and turbine impedances control instabilities directly so that the determination of the impedances of turbomachinery elements becomes a key issue. Gathering experimental data on combustion instabilities is difficult in real engines and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) has become a major tool in this field. Recent examples, however, show that LES is not sufficient and that theory, even in these complex systems, plays a major role to understand both experimental and LES results and to identify mitigation techniques.

A vibro-acoustic modal model of a traction motor for railway applications is presented based on an experimental modal analysis of the system. Noise requirements for railway traction motors are getting more and more demanding as part of the overall levels of new rolling stock. It is therefore of great interest to understand and predict the vibro-acoustic behaviour of electromagnetic noise generated by traction motors. The modal parameters are derived from an experimental modal analysis. The primary source for the radiated sound of the tested traction motor is the radial deflections of the stator shield. The modal parameters for the radial deflections are implemented in a reduced order modal model in a state space format using Matlab/Simulink. Only the structural modes that have a match in both the frequency and the spatial domain with the excited electromagnetic force will cause important vibro-acoustic response. This makes it possible to create an accurate and efficient reduced order modal model with only a fraction of the total number of structural modes. The simulation results from the modal model are compared to measurements of operational deflection shapes and acoustic measurements of the motor.

Vibro-Acoustic Modal Model of a Traction Motor for Railway Applications

Tyre/road noise and vibration are the main sources of road traffic noise, which is an increasingly big problem in densely populated areas. At the same time, rolling resistance, caused by the energy losses in the tyre, is a significant part of the total vehicle losses and, therefore, directly affects fuel consumption and C02 emissions. In order to reduce both noise emissions and energy consumption a good understanding of tyre/road interaction and of the influence of tyre and road properties is needed. In this paper the main tyre and road parameters that influence tyre/road noise and rolling resistance are discussed. Special emphasis is placed on tyre/road contact, since the contact forces between tyre and road are the key to a reliable prediction of tyre/road noise, rolling resistance and wear. Although tyre/road models are widely applied to the prediction of tyre/road noise and low-noise road design, the potential of these models for low-rolling resistance road design is not yet fully exploited.
