Salmonella bongori provides insights into the evolution of the salmonellae
Maria Fookes,Gunnar N. Schroeder,Gemma C. Langridge,Carlos J. Blondel,Caterina Mammina,Thomas R. Connor,Helena M. B. Seth-Smith,Georgios S. Vernikos,Keith S. Robinson,Mandy Sanders,Nicola K. Petty,Robert A. Kingsley,Andreas J. Bäumler,Sean Paul Nuccio,Inés Contreras,Carlos A. Santiviago,Duncan J. Maskell,Paul A. Barrow,Tom J. Humphrey,Antonino Nastasi,Mark Roberts,Gad Frankel,Julian Parkhill,Gordon Dougan,Nicholas R. Thomson +24 more
TL;DR: This work suggests that S. bongori has inherited the ancestral Salmonella virulence gene set, but has adapted by incorporating virulence determinants that resemble those employed by EPEC.
Comparative genomic analysis uncovers 3 novel loci encoding type six secretion systems differentially distributed in Salmonella serotypes
TL;DR: Comparative and phylogenetic analyses indicate that the Salmonella T6SS loci were acquired by independent lateral transfer events and evolved to contribute in the adaptation of the serotypes to different lifestyles and environments, including animal hosts.
Trichoderma aureoviride 7-121, a mutant with enhanced production of lytic enzymes: its potential use in waste cellulose degradation and/or biocontrol
TL;DR: A mutant of the native fungus Trichoderma aureoviride, selected for its overproduction of extracellular cellulase and s-glucosidase (cellobiase) was obtained and showed enhanced production of fungal cell wall degrading enzymes: chitinases,s-1,3- glucanases and proteases.

Growth-phase regulation of lipopolysaccharide O-antigen chain length influences serum resistance in serovars of Salmonella.
Denisse Bravo,Cecilia A. Silva,Javier A. Carter,Anilei Hoare,Sergio A. Álvarez,Carlos J. Blondel,Mercedes Zaldívar,Miguel A. Valvano,Inés Contreras +8 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that increased amounts of L-OAg produced by S. Typhi grown to stationary phase confer higher levels of bacterial resistance to human serum, and the presence of Vi antigen did not contribute to serum resistance of clinical isolates of serovar Typhi.

Genetic analysis of antibiotic-resistance determinants in multidrug-resistant Shigella strains isolated from Chilean children.
Cecilia S. Toro,Mauricio J. Farfan,Inés Contreras,Oscar Flores,N. Navarro,Guido C. Mora,Valeria Prado +6 more
TL;DR: The results show a heterogenous distribution of antibiotic-resistance determinants between S. flexneri and S. sonnei, where blaOXA, blaTEM, dhfrIa and dhfrIIIc genes were found either in the chromosome or in conjugative plasmids.
