The growth in Seventh Sustainable goals with Electric Vehicles has been seen day by day due to limitations of traditional combustion engine especially which are having adverse impact on environment. Traditional method follows charging of EVs using the utility grid which leads to unbalance and burden on the existing distribution system. Hence, to address the issues and reduce the dependency on fossil fuel which are limitedly available and cause the air pollution, the charging of EV is encouraged with the use of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) such as solar energy, wind energy, tidal energy, and biomass etc. Among all these energy sources, the solar photovoltaic (PV) based system is a best and feasible solution for EV charging. Also, the main barrier in EV adoption is more charging time and hence to rectify the issues many researchers have been in progress in EV solar powered Fast Charging Station (FCS). This paper reviewed about solar powered FCS and their power quality issues. Moreover, it describes the solution to power quality problems related to integration of PV system, EV and FCS with grid integration.

Power Quality issues in Solar Powered Fast Charging Station for Electric Vehicle: Comprehensive Review & Mitigation Measures

In this work, the analysis of a PV based isolated-bidirectional electric vehicle charger (IBEVC) for house-hold application is presented for EV battery charging and with simultaneous power quality improvement. When sufficient PV power is available, the electrical power generated by PV is used to charge EV batteries, residential loads, and feed power to the utility grid in this IBEVC system. When PV power is insufficient, the grid supplies active power to household loads and the EV battery and IBEVC provides reactive power. For harmonic compensation by IBEVC, the fundamental load current is extracted utilising the Logarithmic hyperbolic cosine (LHC) based algorithm. For bidirectional power flow to the battery for charging and discharging, the Dual active bridge (DAB) converter is utilised to provide isolation between the battery and the supply. Extended phase shift (EPS) modulation is implemented to reduce current stress in inductor current and device currents, and improves the efficiency of the DAB. The various operating modes of the IBEVC for EV battery charging/discharging along with the capability of power quality improvement are discussed in detail.

Solar Isolated Bi-directional Electric Vehicle Charger with Power Quality Enhancement Features

This paper investigates the application of active power filtering and simultaneous battery charging of solar photovoltaic (PV) based bi-directional electric vehicle charger (EVC) for residential application. With the growth of EVs, the development of EV charging infrastructure and the mitigation of power quality issues is very essential now. In solar PV-based bi-directional EVC, the solar power is utilized for EV battery charging and the surplus power is supplied to home loads, and can also be supplied to utility-grid in grid-connected applications. However, when PV power is insufficient, it enables Grid-to-Vehicle (G2V) mode to consume deficit power from the grid for battery charging and home loads. Additionally, it can also enable Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) mode, where the EV delivers power to home loads and to the grid from the EV battery. The capability of the bi-directional EVC system can further be extended in harmonic mitigation and reactive power compensation using suitable control. In this paper, the bidirectional power flow and active filtering capabilities of a PV-based bi-directional EVC system are discussed. The fundamental load current component is estimated using an adaptive SLAD algorithm. The EVC system is validated in simulation studies performed in MATLAB/Simulink environment for various operating conditions.
