The results of surgical repair for pelvic factures in 31 dogs were reviewed. Lameness and weight bearing scores were used to evaluate functional recovery of the hind limbs. Simple fracture occurred in sacroiliac joint (n = 5) and ilium (n = 3). Pelvic fractures had acetabular (n = 7) and non-acetabular fractures (n = 23). Acetabular fracture cases were composed of additional surgical treatments with femoral head and neck ostectomy (FANO) (n = 4) and only acetabular rim fixation (n = 3). Simple fractures had more rapid initial and complete recovery times than multiple fractures. Non-acetabular fracture cases (initial recovery time: 2.7 weeks, complete recovery time: 9.1 weeks) had more rapid initial and complete recovery times than acetabular fracture cases (8.4, 12.5 weeks) (p ＜ 0.05). In addition, the cases of additional surgical treatment with FHNO (5.3, 7 weeks) had more rapid mean recovery times than surgical treatment without FHNO (11.1, 16.3 weeks). Surgical approach with FHNO in acetabular fracture was an alternative method to treat pelvic fractures in small breed dogs.

Retrospective Study on Surgical Repair of 31 Canine Pelvic Fracture Cases

Many drugs are administered intramuscularly to immobilize and anesthetize dogs. There are many established intramuscular (IM) anesthetic combinations for dogs; however, little information is available on the effects of a xylazine-diazepam-ketamine (XDK) combination. The purpose of this study was to investigate the anesthetic effects of the XDK combination in dogs. Twelve adult mixed bred dogs were used. All dogs were anesthetized with an 1M injection of diazepam (0.5 mg/kg) and xylazine (1.1 mg/kg) with low-dose ketamine (5 mg/kg; group 1) or high-dose ketamine (10 mg/kg; group 2) in one syringe. After administration of the test dose, the animals were positioned in a right lateral recumbency, and analgesia and cardiopulmonary data were collected and recorded. The duration of anesthesia in group 2 was significantly longer than that of group 1 (mean [sd] 68.0 [7.6] v 51.3 [2.7] minutes). Blood pressure increased significantly after XDK administration in both groups, and S a O₂ levels decreased significantly from baseline at 10, 20, and 30 minutes in both groups. XDK administration produced satisfactory sedation and analgesia in all dogs. In conclusion, intramuscular administration of xylazine-diazepam-ketamine combination at a doses of 1.1 mg/kg xylazine, 0.5 mg/kg diazepam, and 5 or 10 mg/kg ketamine appeared to be effective short duration anesthetic protocols in dogs.

A Comparison of Two Intramuscular Doses of a Xylazine-Diazepam-Ketamine Combination in Dogs

This study was performed to evaluate the sensitivity of conventional film-screen radiography (CFSR) and direct digital radiography (DDR) for detection of various amounts of free peritoneal fluid. Ten adult male healthy beagles were used in this study. Radiographic examinations were performed in the right lateral and ventrodorsal positions. Fluid was injected in increments of 2.0 ml/kg of body weight up to 20.0 ml/kg of body weight. The images of CFSR and DDR were evaluated by two veterinary radiologists for evidence of abdominal fluid without knowledge of injected fluid volume. Data were evaluated by using the receiver operation curve (ROC) analysis and the area under the curve (AUC). There was no significant difference in detection of peritoneal fluid between DDR and CFSR in the ROC analysis. The accuracy of CFSR (0.805) was relatively higher than that of DDR (0.733), based on the ROC analysis and AUC. AUC of CFSR was higher in most injection doses. These results suggest that CFSR is more accurate than DDR for the detecting peritoneal fluid. Therefore, for situation in which digital radiographs are equivocal or small amount of fluid is suspected, other imaging modalities, such as ultrasonography would be helpful for determining the presence of fluids.

Comparison of Direct Digital Radiography and Conventional Film Screen Radiography for Detection of Peritoneal Fluid in Dogs

Fifty-four dogs with otitis externa were enrolled in the study for the Evaluation of efficacy of a Hydrocortisone aceponate - Gentamicin - Miconazole otic combination (Easotic ® , Virbac, Carros, France). Otitis externa patients were treated by Easotic ® once daily for 5 days and 2 days off treatment and evaluated on 7 th day. If otitis externa persisted, additional Easotic ® treatment was administered once daily for 5 days and rested 2 days and reevaluated on 14 th day. For the evaluation of efficacy of Easotic ® , eight clinical signs were scored on a severity scale and infectious agents from ear sample were also graded using semi-quantitative scale at each visit. Sum of clinical scores and cytological scores was defined as Global Clinical Score. When Easotic ® was applied once daily for 5 days, global clinical score was reduced 76.0%. When Easotic ® was administered for 10 days, during first 5 days administration, 46.6% reduction of global clinical score was detected. During additional 5 days administration, 82.2% reduction of global clinical score was observed compared with Day 0. Any relevant adverse effect was not reported during the study in all cases. Thus, Easotic ® treatment once daily for 5 days and 10 days appears to be effective and safe treatment for canine otitis externa.

Effect of Hydrocortisone Aceponate - Gentamicin - Miconazole Topical Otic Combination for Treating Canine Otitis Externa

This survey on professionalism and job satisfaction was aimed to analyze the veterinarians" attitude toward their profession and educational needs in Korea. Two hundred and ninety nine completed questionnaires were analyzed for this study. The participants considered nontechnical competences, such as communication skills and ethical decision making skills, important as medical knowledge and skills for veterinarians. There were significant differences in veterinarians" job satisfaction among the subgroups of gender, region, specialty, employment status, and work hours. The factor analysis of adjusted Hall"s professionalism scale showed 4 dimensions of Veterinarians" professionalism; belief in self-regulation, belief in public service, using the professional organization as a major referent, and autonomy. Veterinarians" professionalism was significantly related to the job satisfaction. The survey results suggest that the educational program of professionalism should be needed for the professional development of veterinary students and veterinarians.
