What makes organizations so similar? We contend that the engine of rationalization and bureaucratization has moved from the competitive marketplace to the state and the professions. Once a set of organizations emerges as a field, a paradox arises: rational actors make their organizations increasingly similar as they try to change them. We describe three isomorphic processes-coercive, mimetic, and normative—leading to this outcome. We then specify hypotheses about the impact of resource centralization and dependency, goal ambiguity and technical uncertainty, and professionalization and structuration on isomorphic change. Finally, we suggest implications for theories of organizations and social change.

The Concept of Corporate Strategy

Norman R. Smith, an associate professor of marketing at the University of Oregon, suggests in this study some tentative hypotheses regarding entrepreneurial types and the companies which they tend to establish. He accepts Cole s definition of entrepreneur as \"the individual who is primarily responsible for gathering together the necessary resources to initiate a business\" (p. 2). The sample consists of data obtained from fifty-two interviews with machine-tool manufacturers in six Michigan cities. All of the companies started after 1945 and have been in operation at least five years. Thus the sample deals with \"successful\" firms which survived the crucial formative period. Smith is more concerned with the last two stages of Cole's delineation of initiation, maintenance, and aggrandizement. The method employed is the one developed by sociologist John C. McKinney in the construction of \"ideal types.\" Smith formulates two polar types of entrepreneurs and firms and measures the deviations from each and then compares the man and the firm to analyze the correlation. Basically, one type of entrepreneur, which Smith calls the CraftsmanEntrepreneur, moves in a very limited cultural range and is narrow in outlook. His opposite, the Opportunist-Entrepreneur, responds to a broad range of culture and liberal views. These attitudes were conditioned by entrepreneurial experiences in education and work background, and his role-model. These polar types are also measured by social awareness, degree of flexibility in delegating responsibility, hiring policies, labor relations, capital sources, competitive strategy, sales procedures, and long-range planning. Smith concludes that the C-E is associated with firms classified as rigid while the O-E runs companies that are adaptive. The firms were measured as deviations from the two polar types on the basis of customer and product diversification, production methods, dispersed production faculties and markets, and concrete plans for change. Smith's final hypothesis is that the adaptive company with an O-E at the helm will sustain a higher growth rate than the rigid firm with a C-E. Using Jenks' distinction between \"owner-manager\" and \"entrepreneurial-executive,\" which corresponds roughly with the C-E and O-E, Smith concludes that only the latter type has a chance to lead the firm successfully through the phases of initiation, maintenance, and aggrandizement.

Cette communication ébauche un cadre théorique, centré sur le concept de logique d’action, capable de rendre compte de la complexité sociologique de la création d’entreprise. Ce cadre s’inspire, en les adaptant, de certaines grilles de lecture développées en sociologie des organisations. Il articule deux dimensions fondamentales. La première concerne l’acteur créateur, à la fois générateur de stratégies et produit social-historique. La seconde vise la situation d’action, c’est-àdire le moment et l’espace (social, organisationnel, matériel...) particuliers dans lequel s’inscrit l’action stratégique.

Depuis une dizaine d’annees, l’univers de l’agriculture et de l’alimentation biologique a connu une forte evolution, notamment sur le plan reglementaire et politique, avec d’une part la mise en place de cahiers des charges et d’un dispositif de certification officiels et d’autre part le lancement d’une politique publique de soutien a son developpement . Parallelement la structuration des differentes filieres (cereales, legumes, viande, lait) s’opere lentement et souvent avec beaucoup de difficultes alors que le nombre d’exploitations agricoles en AB et le marche se developpent . L’enjeu principal de l’ensemble de la filiere est situe au niveau de la capacite de ses acteurs de se structurer, de maniere a mieux gerer la croissance du marche et par la le developpement de leurs activites. Les acteurs impliques dans cet univers - producteurs, transformateurs, distributeurs - mais aussi organisations professionnelles et collectivites regionales souhaitent mieux comprendre comment evolue l’univers du bio, pour cerner les problemes actuels et les enjeux futurs. Cette communication est fondee sur les resultats d’un projet regional « Pays de la Loire », elle se focalise sur la filiere fruits et legumes , et vise a comprendre les difficultes de structuration de cette filiere. Apres avoir dresse un rapide tableau economique et historique de la filiere biologique en France, nous exposons le contexte de l’etude et les outils theoriques retenus (problematique, dispositif d’enquete et grille d’analyse). Puis, nous presentons les resultats pour caracteriser les acteurs, leurs logiques d’action et eclairer ainsi les dynamiques a l’œuvre au sein de cette filiere et ses difficultes de structuration. Enfin nous proposons une discussion sur les limites des analyses de filiere, n’accordant pas de poids aux acteurs et a leurs projets.

Filière biologique et logiques d’action : éléments d’analyse des difficultés de structuration d’une filière régionale

Notre recherche est concentree sur l'examen de la structure des hypogroupes familiaux. Il s'agit de comprendre pourquoi et comment les entreprises familiales se developpent-elles en hypogroupes ? Notre recherche etant exploratoire, nous avons adopte une demarche qualitative. L'information est alors, collectee par le biais d'un entretien semi directif aupres des dirigeants proprietaires de sept cas d'hypogroupes. Les donnees ont fait l'objet d'une analyse de contenu thematique. Nous avons pu conclure que le developpement des entreprises familiales en hypogroupes n'est pas specifique au profil du dirigeant PIC ou CAP. C'est plutot la famille qui affecte les objectifs prioritaires du dirigeant proprietaire a travers la volonte de la transmission, l'altruisme, la confiance et la structure de la famille. La creation de nouvelles unites permet d'assurer la perennite et de faire face a la surcharge de l'entreprise qui ne peut pas integrer tous les membres de la famille. En plus, le developpement en hypogroupe permet de tisser un terrain d'independance pour chaque membre qui dirige une nouvelle unite afin d'eviter les conflits entre successeurs. Cette independance est aussi recherchee pour resoudre les conflits entre generations inherents a la croissance visee par le successeur CAP. Les objectifs prioritaires du dirigeant sont aussi determines par l'environnement. Les regles institutionnelles affectent la prise de decision quant au choix des activites a developper. La dependance envers les partenaires pousse a se diversifier en creant de nouvelles unites. La creation de nouvelles unites organisees en hypogroupe est aussi exploitee pour saisir les opportunites de marche.
