A plurality of computer nodes communicate using seemingly random Internet Protocol source and destination addresses. Data packets matching criteria defined by a moving window of valid addresses are accepted for further processing, while those that do not meet the criteria are quickly rejected. Improvements to the basic design include (1) a load balancer that distributes packets across different transmission paths according to transmission path quality; (2) a DNS proxy server that transparently creates a virtual private network in response to a domain name inquiry; (3) a large-to-small link bandwidth management feature that prevents denial-of-service attacks at system chokepoints; (4) a traffic limiter that regulates incoming packets by limiting the rate at which a transmitter can be synchronized with a receiver; and (5) a signaling synchronizer that allows a large number of nodes to communicate with a central node by partitioning the communication function between two separate entities.

Method and apparatus providing connection-oriented services for packet switched data communications networks. Directory services include distributed discovery of MAC addresses and protocol alias addresses. Topology services include a link state topology exchange among switches, which provides each switch with a complete topology graph of the network. This enables an access switch receiving a data packet to determine a complete path from a source end system to a destination end system. Another service includes resolution of broadcast frames to unicast frames, in order to reduce the amount of broadcast traffic. Policy restrictions may be applied prior to connection setup. Path determination services enable multiple paths from a source to a destination. Connection management includes source routed mapping of connections on the desired path. A distributed call rerouting service is provided wherein if a link on an active path fails, each switch receives a topology change notification and unmaps any connection involving the failed link. A broadcast/unknown service provides restricted flooding of nonresolvable packets. Furthermore, connection-oriented switching is provided based on the source and destination MAC addresses as a connection identifier. Still further, resolution of networks outside the switch domain is enabled by access switches listening for network and server route advertisements and maintaining best routes to said networks and servers. The best route metrics may be combined with best path metrics to determine a path from a first access switch to an egress switch connected to the external network.

The present invention can identify relationships between one or more real-time, raw computer events as they are received in real-time. The fusion engine can also assess and rank the risk of real-time raw events as well as mature correlation events.

Method and System for Managing Computer Security Information

A security system for connecting a first computer network to a second computer network is provided. The security device has a pair of computer motherboards, each of which has a network interface adapter for receiving and transferring communications from a computer network to a transfer adapter to be transmitted to the other computer network through a transfer adapter and network interface adapter provided on the other computer motherboard. Each motherboard provides protocol translation from a first protocol to a second protocol and removes source and destination address information from communications transferred to the other computer motherboard. Application program interface shim software or dynamic link library software provides control of communications between the two motherboards for passing code necessary to request and receive services from the other computer network.

A system and method is disclosed for detecting security vulnerabilities in a computer network. The system includes an IP spoofing attack detector, a stealth port service map generator, a source port verifier, source routing verifier, an RPC service detector and a Socks configuration verifier. Each of these verifiers may be operated separately or as a group to detect security vulnerabilities on a network. Each verifier may be programmed to exhaustively test all ports of all computers on a network to detect susceptibility to IP spoofing attacks, access to services with little or no authorization checks or misconfigured routers or Socks servers. The detected vulnerabilities or the location of services having little or no authorization checks may be stored in a table for reference by a network administrator. The service map generated by the stealth service map generator may be used to identify all service ports on a network to facilitate the operation of the other verifiers which send service command messages to service ports to detect their accessibility. A graphic user interface (GUI) may be used to provide input and control by a user to the security verifiers and to present options and display information to the user.

Method and apparatus for detecting and identifying security vulnerabilities in an open network computer communication system

A method and apparatus for providing secure communication on open networks. Each port of the network is provided with a security entity which monitors the communication between one port to the other. End stations connected to the ports communicate with other end stations by transmitting data to the port and receiving data from the port. The data is sent out in data packets with a destination address and a source address. Each port has its own unique address. The security entity checks data packets coming into the port for a destination address. The destination address of incoming data packets is compared with the port address of the affiliated port. Also, outgoing data packets from an end station to a port are also monitored by the security entity. The security entity compares the destination and source address of the data packet with the affiliated port address. The security entity cyphers and decyphers a data portion of the data packet depending on whether or not the source address, destination address and port address match. In this way, end stations not destined to read the data portions are thus prevented from doing so. Also end stations which are not authorized to transmit onto the network are prevented from having any users on the network understand their data.
