To address the question as to whether managers manipulate accounting numbers downwards prior to management buyouts (MBOs), we implement an industry-adjusted buyout-specific approach and receive an affirmative answer. In UK buyout companies, negative earnings manipulation (understating the earnings prior to the deal) often occurs, both by means of accrual management and real earnings management. We demonstrate that MBOs are significantly more frequently subject to negative manipulation than leveraged buyouts (LBOs). In non-buyout firms, positive earnings management frequently occurs because it affects managers’ bonuses and the likelihood of meeting or beating analysts’ expectations which may trigger a positive market reaction. By means of an instrumental variables approach, we examine competing incentives affecting the degree and size of earnings manipulation. Our evidence implies that the (ex ante) perceived likelihood that an MBO will be undertaken has a strong significant effect on negative earnings management, while the external borrowing capacity of the buyout company is not determined by standard capital structure factors, such as earnings numbers. The implementation of the revised UK Corporate Governance Code of 2003 has somewhat reduced the degree of both accrual earnings and real management in MBOs, but since then other manipulation techniques (related to production costs and asset revaluations) are more frequently used, which may be induced by the fact that these manipulation methods are more difficult to detect.

Do Managers Manipulate Earnings Prior to Management Buyouts

Effect Tax Planning on the of Earnings Management in NonManufacturing Companies Registered on the Indonesia Stock Exchange) This study aims to analyze the effect of tax planning on earnings management. The object of this research is Sub Sector of Property, Real Estate, and Building Construction Services which listed on Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) with observation period from 2014 until 2016 As many as 34 companies . Data used in this research is data based on annual financial statements obtained through the site www.idx.co.id and www.sahamoke.com. Method of sampling by using purposive sampling. The results of this study indicate that tax planning has no positive and insignificant effect on earnings management. Keywords : Tax planning, earnings management.

Pengaruh perencanaan pajak terhadap manajemen laba pada perusahaan nonmanufaktur yang terdaftar di bursa efek indonesia

The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of Company Risk, Liquidity, Leverage and Capital Adequacy Ratio on Earning Management and whether Capital Adequacy Ratio moderates the relation between Company Risk, Liquidity and Leverage and Earning Management of Banking Companies listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange during 2014-2018. Sampling techniques uses purposive sampling based on determined criteria and data analysis is performed by multiple regression analysis using E-Views 11.0 version. The result shows that in partial, Company Risk positively, Liquidity and Capital Adequacy negatively affects significantly on Earning Management, while Leverage does not and in the other side Capital Adequacy Ratio only moderates the relation between Liquidity and Earning Management. All variables simultaneously affect weakly on Earning Management. This research implies that due to weakly impact result, banking management must reobserve the role of Company Risk, Liquidity, Leverage and Capital Adequacy Ratio in executing Earning Management.

The Relation of Company Risk, Liquidity, Leverage, Capital Adequacy and Earning Management: Evidence from Indonesia Banking Companies

The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of deferred tax disclosed under the Egyptian Accounting Standard No. 24, income taxes and tax planning on earnings management. In addition, to investigate the role of net deferred tax liabilities as a mediator between tax planning and earnings management. This study employs a sample of 127 firms listed on the Egyptian stock exchange covering the period 2012 to 2018 ending up with 889 observations. Stratified simple random sampling technique was used to select the sample. Path analysis is employed to examine the framework of the study and analyses the indirect effect of tax planning on earnings management. In addition, Ordinary Least Square Regression is employed to calculate discretionary accrual, which is used as a proxy to earnings management. The results suggest that tax planning does not have a significant direct effect on earnings management. However, it has a significant indirect effect on earnings management through net deferred tax liabilities, which in turn has a significant direct effect on earnings management. Findings of this paper may be of interest to financial analysts and standard setters, as they highlight how tax planning and deferred tax liabilities affect the quality of accounting information.

Does deferred tax mediate the relationship between tax planning and earnings management

The purpose of this study is to analyze and provide empirical evidence of the influence of deferred tax asset, discretionary accrual, leverage, company size, and tax planning on earnings management. Financial performance is an indicator that is required by company management to measure the effectiveness of company performance. This research used secondary data that was got from annual report published in www.idx.co.id and data from Indonesian Capital Market Directory (ICMD). Populations of the research are manufacturing companies listed on Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2011-2013. Samples were selected by using purposive sampling method. There are 208 observations that will examined by logistic regression analysis. The result shows that deferred tax asset has negative and not significant effect to the earnings management, discretionary accrual has negative and not significant effect to the earnings management, leverage has negative and significant effect to the earnings management, company size has positive and significant effect to the earnings management, tax planning has positive and not significant effect to the earnings management. Tujuan penelitian ini menganalisis bukti empiris mengenai pengaruh asset pajak tangguhan, discretionary accrual, leverage, ukuran perusahaan, dan perencanaan pajak terhadap manajemen laba. Kinerja keuangan adalah indikator untuk mengukur efektivitas perusahaan. Penelitian ini menggunakan data sekunder yang diperoleh dari www.idx.co.id serta data dari Indonesian Capital Market Directory (ICMD). Populasi penelitian ini adalah perusahaan manufaktur yang terdaftar di BEI tahun 2011-2013. Sampel dipilih dengan purposive sampling. Terdapat 208 observasi yang akan diuji dengan model analisis regresi logistik. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa asset pajak tangguhan memiliki pengaruh negatif dan tidak signifikan terhadap praktik manajemen laba, discretionary accrual memiliki pengaruh negatif dan tidak signifikan terhadap praktik manajemen laba, leverage memiliki pengaruh negatif dan signifikan terhadap praktik manajemen laba, ukuran perusahaan memiliki pengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap praktik manajemen laba, perencanaan pajak memiliki pengaruh positif dan tidak signifikan terhadap praktik manajemen laba.
