Gold nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in sodium antimony borate glass system were fabricated and their optical, physical, structural, ultrafast nonlinear optical properties were studied and analyzed. Metallic gold NPs were synthesized using thermal reducing agent Sb2O3 and demonstrated the reduction mechanism of Au3 +/Au+ → Au0 by using reduction potentials of corresponding redox system. UV–Visible spectroscopy measurements have revealed the characteristic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Au NPs at ~ 565 nm, attributed due to interband transition. The micrographs of High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM) confirmed the existence of uniformly distributed spherical shaped Au NPs with particle sizes in the 8–45 nm range with an average particle size of 25 nm. The ultrafast nonlinear optical properties of gold doped glasses were investigated using the Z-scan technique at a non-resonant wavelength (λ = 800 nm, 80 MHz repetition rate) with femtosecond (fs) Ti:sapphire laser pulses. Z-scan measurements of undoped glass depicted are verse saturable absorption (RSA) type of nonlinearity whereas the gold-doped glass demonstrated saturable absorption (SA) kind of nonlinearity due to intraband (sp → sp) transitions. The Z-scan data demonstrated that the investigated glasses are potential materials for the applications in nonlinear optics devices, particularly in optical switching devices.

Nanostructured silver films are studied using computational and experimental methods. Surface plasmon resonance-related phenomena are emphasized. Resonant optical absorption band changes due to the influence of noxious gases are investigated. Amplification of light at the film surface due to local electromagnetic field enhancement at the nanoscale is discussed based on finite difference time domain calculations.

Random nanostructured metallic films for environmental monitoring and optical sensing: experimental and computational studies.

Plasmonic nanostructures have emerging applications in solar cells, photodynamic therapies, surface-enhanced Raman scattering detection, and photocatalysis due to the excitation of localized surface plasmons. The exciting electric field resulting from the collective oscillation of free electrons is highly dependent on the dielectric medium, shape, size, composition, and configuration of plasmonic nanostructures. From an engineering perspective, one can tune the optimal properties in the desired applications of geometrical parameters such as the shape, size, and nanoparticles’ configuration. Such optimization should be performed analytically (with exact solutions) or numerically (with specific approximations). Despite the accuracy of the analytical approaches (such as Mie theory), they have mainly been limited to arbitrary and simple geometries, i.e. spheres. This review revisited the theory of mostly implemented numerical approaches for simulating the optical response of plasmonic nanostructures. This paper discusses the finite difference time domain (FDTD), finite element method (FEM), discrete dipole approximation (DDA), and boundary element method (BEM) from both theoretical and practical points of view. The most recent applications of numerical simulations in different fields are presented and discussed. This comprehensive review can be promisingly considered as a guide for the researchers.

Computational electromagnetics in plasmonic nanostructures

Nonlinear properties of Li 2 B 4 O 7 :Ag borate glasses with “Li 2 B 4 O 7 :Ag nanoparticles” interface region formed by thermal treatment in hydrogen atmosphere and in vacuum are investigated. From the results of plasmon absorption and normalized transmission measurements in Z -scan regime it was ascertained that “Li 2 B 4 O 7 :AgNPs” interface region changes the character of nonlinear refraction of Li 2 B 4 O 7 :Ag glass from negative to positive, and, due to plasmon resonance, increases significantly its nonlinear properties. In particular, the observed growth of nonlinear refractive index n 2 is more than four orders of magnitude.

AFM Investigations and Plasmon Spectra of Silver Clusters Formed on Li 2 B 4 O 7 :Ag Glass Surface in Reducing Atmosphere

In this paper, an interaction of metal nanoparticles that appears in the extinction spectra was investigated. The mutual coupling between the nanoparticles, the effect of size difference, and the interparticle separation in silver nanoparticle dimers are studied by computer discrete dipole approximation methods. The obtained results show that nanoparticle interaction results in the distinct collective modes, known as the low-energy bonding modes and the higher-energy antibounding modes. The spectral position of the modes is analyzed as a function of the ratio of interparticle distance to particle size that reduces the dependency on the particle size itself. The optical spectra of nanoparticles that form the fractal cluster were investigated. It was found that the number of spectral bands increase with the growth of the number of nanoparticles in the fractal cluster, which are described within the plasmon hybridization model.
