This paper gives the 2010 self-consistent set of values of the basic constants and conversion factors of physics and chemistry recommended by the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) for international use. The 2010 adjustment takes into account the data considered in the 2006 adjustment as well as the data that became available from 1 January 2007, after the closing date of that adjustment, until 31 December 2010, the closing date of the new adjustment. Further, it describes in detail the adjustment of the values of the constants, including the selection of the final set of input data based on the results of least-squares analyses. The 2010 set replaces the previously recommended 2006 CODATA set and may also be found on the World Wide Web at physics.nist.gov/constants.

Gold is an element whose unique properties are strongly influenced by relativistic effects. A large body of appropriate calculations now exist and their main conclusions are summarized. The theoretical interpretation of the aurophilic attraction is discussed in detail.

Theoretical chemistry of gold.

In this reference we present many of the physical and optical properties of Rb that are relevant to various quantum optics experiments. In particular, we give parameters that are useful in treating the mechanical effects of light on Rb atoms. The measured numbers are given with their original references, and the calculated numbers are presented with an overview of their calculation along with references to more comprehensive discussions of their underlying theory. We also present a detailed discussion of the calculation of fluorescence scattering rates, because this topic is often not treated carefully in the literature. Theory of light hydrogenlike atoms

Relativistic effects can strongly influence the chemical and physical properties of heavy elements and their compounds. This influence has been noted in inorganic chemistry textbooks for a couple of decades. This review provides both traditional and new examples of these effects, including the special properties of gold, lead-acid and mercury batteries, the shapes of gold and thallium clusters, heavy-atom shifts in NMR, topological insulators, and certain specific heats.

A new method for the calculation of the self-energy for tightly bound electrons is presented. The method is based on the multiple commutator expansion and the partial-wave renormalization. Electron self-energy calculations for tightly bound electrons in atoms

The QED theory of atoms is reviewed. The principles of QED, the QED theory of the interelectron interaction and the radiative corrections to the energy levels (the Lamb Shift) are considered. The applications of QED to the light atoms and to valence electrons in heavy atoms are discussed.

QED theory of atoms

The non-resonant (NR) QED corrections to the cascade processes following radiative electron capture by a bare uranium nucleus are considered in connection with the recent measurement of the Lamb shift using electrons from a cooler. Though the calculated values of NR correction are considerably smaller than the experimental accuracy, the analysis shows that the different cascade processes have strongly different dependence on NR corrections. This gives in principle the opportunity to optimize the measurements of the Lamb shift.

The non-resonant corrections to the process of the radiative electron capture of highly charged heavy ions

An estimate for the last unknown gauge-invariant set of QED corrections of order 2 ,t he second-order self-energy correction, is presented utilizing the so-called sign approximation. This is able to reduce the present uncertainties in Lamb-shift predictions considerably. Highly charged ions provide an ideal scenario to demonstrate the validity of QED in strong fields, e.g., by measurements of the Lamb shift at utmost precision. In this respect the recent experimental progress made in measurements in hydrogen-like uranium [1] indicates that calculations of higher-order radiative corrections become relevant. The set of second-order QED diagrams includes all various combinations of the first-order self-energy (SE) and vacuum polarization (VP) effects. The present status of theoretical predictions for the Lamb shift in different one-electron ions is presented in [2]. However, the calculations of the most difficult set of diagrams (see figure 1), the second-order self-energy correction (SESE) are yet uncomplete [3‐ 6], which remains as source for major theoretical uncertainties in present Lamb-shift predictions. To close this gap is a challenge for theory. As a step towards this, we present an estimate for the two-photon self-energy contribution. The graph SESE (a) consists of the irreducible and the reducible contributions. Utilizing Feynman gauge the first part can be renormalized and calculated separately since it does not contain infrared divergencies. The irreducible part has been calculated in [3] for large nuclear charge numbers Z and in [4,6] for arbitrary values of Z .F or high-Z systems all results obtained coincide, while for low- and intermediate-Z values a discrepancy between [4] and [6] has been found. In Feynman gauge, the remaining reducible part of the SESE (a) graph and the two diagrams SESE (b) and (c) have to be calculated simultaneously in order to cancel infrared and ultraviolet divergences arising from different diagrams [7]. Estimate of the second order electron self energy corrections in highly charged heavy ions

The `dynamical' model of the hyperfine structure in which the electron is assumed to interact with the valence proton through the exchange of a photon is applied to the state of highly charged ions. The contributions of the magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole and magnetic octupole moments are calculated. The outer proton charge and magnetic moment distributions and the relativistic effect in the motion of this proton are taken into account.
