The purpose of the study was to examine potential differences between male and female alpine ski naive young people in attitudes towards alpine skiing before and after the completion of structured alpine ski school program. We included 136 ski beginners (41 women and 95 men) who anonymously filled out a previously validated 26-item Lickert scale-type questionnaire related to their attitudes towards skiing just before and at the end of the skiing course. Alpine ski course program positively affected attitude change in favor of alpine skiing for the overall group of participants (p=.00) as well as when the scores were analyzed separately for the male (p=.00) and female ski beginners (p=.01). Although male participants had initially a more positive attitude towards skiing than their female counterparts (p=.03), upon completion of the alpine ski course program both the women and men changed their attitude in a positive direction and the statistical significance between genders was lost. The findings confirm that the structured program of alpine ski course can improve attitude towards alpine skiing. Moreover, when ski instructors are familiar with the attitudes and expectations of their ski beginners in advance, they can adjust instruction program to increase interest in alpine skiing.

Effects of alpine ski course program on attitudes towards alpine skiing

The assumption of this study was that attitude towards alpine skiing and expectations of ski novices affect the level of achieved alpine ski knowledge. So, the aim was to determine correlation between alpine ski novices’ attitude towards alpine skiing before the learning process and level of acquired knowledge after completion of structured alpine ski school program. 112 alpine ski novices (33 females and 79 males) participated in the study. All were tested on 26-item scale questionnaire for attitude evaluation and were included in 10-days alpine ski school program. After completion of ski school, all participants demonstrated eight elements of alpine ski technique which was used as a measure of acquired ski knowledge. Results showed statistically significant correlation between acquired alpine ski knowledge and attitude of ski novices towards alpine skiing (r = .36). The most statistically significant correlation was determined between the level of learned parallel turn and attitude towards skiing (r = .42). Our results point to importance of attitude towards alpine skiing and alpine ski learning.

How through understanding of alpine ski novices' attitudes towards alpine skiing make the alpine ski school more efficaceous.

One's attitude towards sport can potentially influence the success of learning knowledge and skills of specific sport activity. The aim of this research was to construct a scale for evaluation of attitude towards alpine skiing as a specific recreational activity. For this purpose we constructed a scale initially consisting of 60 statements of both positive and negative attitude towards alpine skiing. Statements included affective, cognitive and behavioral components. The research was conducted on 173 participants (72 female and 101 male), students of Faculty of Kinesiology University of Zagreb by the use of five graded scale on which participants could claim their statements with 1. I strongly disagree ; 2. I disagree ; 3. It is all the same ; 4. I agree ; 5. I strongly agree. Parameters of descriptive statistics were calculated for all the variables, correlation of each variable with first component, as well as reliability and homogeneity. After analysis initial scale was condensed to 26 statements, which improved reliability (Cronbach α=0.92) and homogeneity (r=0.33). Factor analysis extracted six statistically significant components from the scale of attitude towards alpine skiing. First component is the participants attitude towards alpine skiing (λ=9.24) and with proportion of 35.53% it explains the results of evaluation of attitude towards alpine skiing. To conclude, the constructed scale of 26 statements will among other enable monitoring of attitude changes influenced by alpine ski knowledge acquisition, and will give the answer to what proportion the attitude towards alpine skiing influences efficiency of alpine ski learning.
