We offer and test a simple operationalization of hedonic and eudaimonic well-being (“happiness”) as mediating variables that link outcomes to motivation. In six evolutionary agent-based simulation experiments, we compared the relative performance of agents endowed with different combinations of happiness-related traits (parameter values), under four types of environmental conditions. We found (i) that the effects of attaching more weight to longer-term than to momentary happiness and of extending the memory for past happiness are both stronger in an environment where food is scarce; (ii) that in such an environment “relative consumption,” in which the agent’s well-being is negatively affected by that of its neighbors, is more detrimental to survival when food is scarce; and (iii) that having a positive outlook, under which agents’ longer-term happiness is increased by positive events more than it is decreased by negative ones, is generally advantageous.

Between Pleasure and Contentment: Evolutionary Dynamics of Some Possible Parameters of Happiness

Recognizing the right opportunities is a key capability in the entrepreneurial process, and creative entrepreneurs’ well-being at work can strengthen their inherent motivation to absorb external knowledge for desirable outcomes. Well-being at work is pleasant judgments of positive attitudes or pleasant experiences, but previous research mainly regarded well-being as an outcome variable. Therefore, this study considers the role of well-being as a mediator conceptualized in physical, psychological, and social well-being dimensions in the opportunity recognition process. Based upon the self-determination theory, this study examines how creative entrepreneurs’ motivation, including creative thinking, self-efficacy, and relatedness, influences their well-being and further affects opportunity recognition. Results from a sample of 234 creative entrepreneurs in Taiwan show that well-being positively mediates the effect of relatedness on opportunity recognition capabilities and absorptive capacity. Moreover, creative thinking and self-efficacy are associated with relatedness, and further with well-being. The key findings suggest that well-being plays a critical role to stimulate motivation for further capability building. This study extends the self-determination theory by linking entrepreneurial motivation with well-being in the entrepreneurial opportunity seeking process.

Creative Entrepreneurs’ Well-Being, Opportunity Recognition and Absorptive Capacity: Self-Determination Theory Perspective

Agent-based models (ABMs) often rely on psychometric constructs such as ‘opinions’, ‘stubbornness’, ‘happiness’, etc. The measurement process for these constructs is quite different from the one used in physics as there is no standardized unit of measurement for opinion or happiness. Consequently, measurements are usually affected by ‘psychometric distortions,’ which can substantially impact models’ predictions. Even if distortions are well known in psychometrics, their existence and nature is obscure to many researchers outside this field. In this paper, we introduce distortions to the ABM community. Initially, we show where distortions come from and how to observe them in real-world data. We then show how they can strongly impact predictions, qualitative comparison with data and the problem they pose for validation of models. We conclude our analysis by discussing how researchers may mitigate this problem and highlight possible future modelling trends that will address this problem. 

The psychometric house-of-mirrors: the effect of measurement distortions on agent-based models’ predictions

The basic objective of the present study is to examine the mediating role of employee loyalty among organizational leadership, organizational culture, employee empowerment, human relational values and profitability of the firm. Moreover, the present study also examined the direct impact of organizational leadership, organizational culture, employee empowerment, human relational values on employee loyalty and the effect of loyalty on profit as well. The researcher used a survey method to collect data from the employees of the cement industry of Indonesia. The valid response rate of the study was 80.5%. For the analysis of the data, the researcher used Smart PLS-3. The findings of the study revealed that organizational culture plays a mediation role between organizational leadership, organizational culture, employee empowerment, human relational values and profitability of the firm. Moreover, loyalty has a significant positive impact on firm profitability and organizational leadership, organizational culture, employee empowerment, and human relational values significantly impact employee loyalty. The present study fills the gap of limited HR studies to enhance organizational profit. The findings of the study are helpful for the policymakers to use these HR strategies to retain customers for a longer period of time.

This paper argues that a person's happiness must be understood as a phenomenon that emerges not only from her individual condition but also from her place in society. Understanding that a person is socially immersed implies giving a greater role to social interactions and social structure. The paper presents a simple model to take into consideration the role of human relations. An agent-based model (ABM) is used to illustrate the implementation of the model in understanding people's happiness.
