Carbon and nutrient removal from centrates and domestic wastewater using algal-bacterial biofilm bioreactors
Esther Posadas,Pedro-Antonio García-Encina,Anna Soltau,Antonio Domínguez,Ignacio Díaz,Raúl Muñoz +5 more
TL;DR: Carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus removals were recorded in the algal-bacterial bioreactor at 10d of hydraulic retention time when treating domestic wastewater, however, the high water footprint could eventually compromise the environmental sustainability of this microalgae-based technology.

Microalgal-Biotechnology As a Platform for an Integral Biogas Upgrading and Nutrient Removal from Anaerobic Effluents
TL;DR: This proof of concept study confirmed that algal-bacterial photobioreactors can support an integral upgrading without biogas contamination, with a net negative CO2 footprint, energy production, and a reduction of the eutrophication potential of the residual anaerobic effluents.

Enclosed tubular and open algal–bacterial biofilm photobioreactors for carbon and nutrient removal from domestic wastewater
Esther Posadas,Pedro A. García-Encina,Antonio Domínguez,Ignacio Díaz,Eloy Bécares,Saúl Blanco,Raúl Muñoz +6 more
TL;DR: Monitoring of the dynamics of microalgae population revealed that open biofilm photobioreactors can support a highermicroalgae diversity than their enclosed counterparts.

Feasibility study of biogas upgrading coupled with nutrient removal from anaerobic effluents using microalgae-based processes
Esther Posadas,D. Szpak,Felipe Lombó,Antonio Domínguez,Ignacio Díaz,Saúl Blanco,Pedro A. García-Encina,Raúl Muñoz +7 more
TL;DR: Good settling characteristics of the algal–bacterial flocs resulted in harvesting efficiencies over 95 %, which represents a cost-effective alternative for algal biomass reutilization compared to conventional physical–chemical techniques, and high microalgae biodiversity was found regardless of the operational conditions.
