An updated checklist and Red List of the mosses of Slovakia is presented. The checklist consists of 699 species with two additional subspecies and 21 additional varieties. According to the Red List presented here, 31.0% of the moss flora of Slovakia was evaluated as threatened (categories Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable), 9.2% as near threatened, 7.3% as data deficient taxa and 49.4% of mosses were classified in the Least Concern category. We modified the category Extinct (EX) to Regionally Extinct/Vanished (RE/VA), which now includes 2.9% of the moss flora. Species Grimmia lisae, Hygrohypnum eugyrium, Lewinskya affinis var. bohemica, Niphotrichum elongatum, Oreas martiana, Orthotrichum moravicum, Osculatia bornholmensis, Tortula cernua and T. randii have been reported recently as new for Slovakia.

Checklist and red list of mosses (Bryophyta) of Slovakia

The objectives of our survey were: to analyze the structure of macroinvetebrate communities in mountain streams in national parks and Biosphere Reserves (Poland, the Slovak Republic), to determine the environmental factors that influence the structure of macroinvertebrate communities and to assess the stream habitats including the bank and channel features, any modifications, land use and channel vegetation. Our results showed that in addition to the conductivity, the altitude, stream gradient and the values of the HQA index that reflected more natural features in the channel and river corridor were most important. The River Habitat Survey (RHS) method reflects not only the morphology but also the relationships between habitat features and the structure of macroinvertebrate communities and it provides a more holistic approach to assessing the health condition of stream ecosystems. Headwater streams support unique macroinvertebrate taxa that are found nowhere else in a catchment and may also constitute refuges for in-stream biota. Some of the least water pollution-tolerant macroinvertebrate taxa were recorded.

In this study we describe how the river morphology of seven High Tatras streams has been influenced in different ways by a severe windstorm that occurred in November 2004. A control site situated in an undisturbed area is compared with six sites in windstorm damaged areas. In 2009–2010 River Habitat Survey (RHS) was used to assess the character of 500 m lengths of stream and to derive associated morphological indices (HQA, HMS sensu Raven 1998, RHS indices sensu Vaughan 2010). Large amounts of large woody debris in the channel influenced the streams despite most of it having been removed after the windstorm. Streams situated in deforested valley slopes were probably more affected by erosion; they had higher amounts of transported inorganic matter and also depositional bar features. Some changes in land-use had occurred with streams situated on the south-east side of the High Tatras having a more uniform banktop vegetation structure than the other streams. Distinct secondary succession of bank top vegetation was observed along windstorm influenced streams. The highest percentage of shrubs occurred where impacted streams remained untouched. Morphologically, the streams most affected by windstorm are those situated in deforested steep valley slopes that are affected by erosion and siltation.

The aim of this study was to examine the contents of calcium, chlorine, chromium, iron, manganese, molybdenum, potassium, rubidium, strontium, sulfur, tin, and zinc in the bones of the alpine bullhead (Cottus poecilopus) related to its vertical distribution in the mountain river Javorinka This river is located on the northern side of the High Tatras, the West Carpathians Sampling took place during 2017, 2018, and 2019 One hundred three individuals of bullheads were collected Only deceased individuals were selected for sampling; there was no deliberate harm to any sampled individuals Weight, body length, and head length and width were measured The amounts of Ca, Rb, and Mo were significantly dependent on the altitude and the fish size At higher altitudes, there are smaller fish that colonize more inaccessible waters with smaller habitat flow options and these smaller fish contain relatively more Ca, Rb, and Mo in their skulls than large fish The presence of Mn, Sr, and Zn was related to the altitude Concentrations of Zn and Sr increase with altitude in the alpine bullhead skulls The amounts of S, Cl, K, Cr, Sn, and Mo did not differ among fish living at different elevations
