Dyes pollution is well known for their hazardous impacts on human health and the environment. The removal of dyes from wastewater has become an important issue. In this study, magnetic micrometer-sized particles AL-CTS@MNPs were synthesized from alkaline lignin (AL) and chitosan (CTS) by "one-pot method". The adsorbent presented higher selectivity adsorption effect on anionic dyes than amphoteric and cationic dyes, and even no adsorption effect on cationic methylene blue (MB), which showed that the anionic dyes could be better separated from the other two types of dyes. The adsorption isotherms of the dyes were highly consistent with the Langmuir model, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 329.50 mg/g for methyl orange (MO) and 20.00 mg/g for rhodamine B (RhB). AL-CTS@MNPs showed good adsorption of anionic dyes (MO) in the pH range of 3-9. Meanwhile, the adsorbent AL-CTS@MNPs were also characterized, showing rough surface with specific surface areas of 37.38 m 

Selective adsorption of anionic dyes by a macropore magnetic lignin-chitosan adsorbent

Ferulic acid is a widespread phenolic compound that occurs in seeds and leaves, both in its free form and conjugated to polysaccharides, carbohydrates, glycoproteins and lignins in the plant cell walls. It exhibits various biological activities, like antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antimicrobial, and antiviral activity, and it modulates enzyme activity. Given these wide potential health benefits, ferulic acid has attracted considerable research interest and may be considered a biomolecule with strong prospects as a functional food ingredient. Great attempts have been made to enhance its extraction process and recovery from natural matrices and agro-industrial wastes for its various applications relating to human health and nutrition. This review presents the recently available information on the extraction methods for quantifying ferulic acid in different samples, along with its bioavailability and stability in processing foods and biological activities. 

Ferulic Acid—A Brief Review of Its Extraction, Bioavailability and Biological Activity

A three-dimensional porous adsorbent, chitosan-alginate-cellulose (CAC) sponge, for efficient and selective adsorption of anionic dyes from aqueous systems was developed using a ternary deep eutectic solvent as the cellulose solvent, polyvinyl alcohol as the porogen, and glutaraldehyde as the crosslinking agent. Compared with unary and binary sponges prepared by chitosan, alginate, and cellulose, the CAC sponge exhibited better adsorption capacity, mechanical property, and water stability. The three-dimensional porous structure of CAC sponge was significantly improved by combining the three polysaccharides and introducing the polyvinyl alcohol and glutaraldehyde. A series of characterizations was performed to investigate the properties of the CAC sponge. The CAC sponge performed high adsorption capacity (105.9–203.7 mg/g) and excellent selectivity to anionic dyes, with the selectivity factor up to 26.5, and the experimental data followed the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models. The adsorption behavior of the CAC sponge exhibited temperature stability and strong pH dependence. The adsorption mechanism and energy were determined using density functional theory, and electrostatic interactions were the main forces for the adsorption of anionic dyes. Finally, the CAC sponge combined with high-performance liquid chromatography was applied to adsorb and detect anionic dyes from river water, tap water, and beverage samples with outstanding enrichment ability (enrichment factors: 31.16–69.69) and selectivity.

Technological advancement in the production of biohydrogen from lignocellulosic biomass: A review

Environmental pollution and energy scarcity have promoted the development of renewable alternative energy of rice straw-based bioethanol. However, the production of main fermentation inhibitors from the pretreatment of rice straw raw material reduces the bioethanol yield. In order to improve bioethanol production, a waste biomass-based adsorbent (AEPA250) was used to adsorb three main inhibitors of ferulic acid, vanillin, and furfural from the rice straw hydrolysate in this study. The adsorption percentages were calculated using the high-performance liquid chromatography method. The results showed that the adsorption percentages of three inhibitors were all above 70% in 10 min, demonstrating the efficient detoxification of AEPA250 on rice straw hydrolysate. The adsorption contributions related to the attribute features of three inhibitors and AEPA250 were evaluated for the first time. The density functional theory calculations and AEPA250 characterizations were used to obtain these attribute parameters. Analysis of the correlation heat map between adsorption efficiencies and attribute features of AEPA250 (or fermentation inhibitors) indicated that AEPA250 possessed the lower activation energy (Ea) and pre-exponential factor (A) when it was prepared, as well as fermentation inhibitors had the higher ionization constant (pKa) and lower electrophilicity index (ω), resulting in the enhancement of bioethanol production. The contribution of pKa was greater than A followed by Ea and ω for adsorption process. Meanwhile, the key metabolic pathways involved in central carbon metabolism were analyzed for AEPA250 detoxification using proteomics method. The results indicated that the up-regulation of SDH3, ACO1, CIT2 and MLS1 (or down-regulation of SCT1) genes contributed to inhibitors detoxification using AEPA250, which effectively provided more nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) for the reduction of these inhibitors. This study explores the detoxification mechanisms at the molecular level for boosting bioethanol production in the future, which lays the foundation for the development of efficient adsorbents and resistant engineering strains.
