ABSTRACT Low cost, non-invasive instruments for the identification of high academic potential in early childhood education and care are scarce, and the complexity of cognitive development indicates that combinations of screening instruments are needed. This study investigates the reliability and validity of three instruments (individually and in combination) in a longitudinal study of 136 Norwegian children in kindergarten through 8th grade with the research questions: (1) Do children's scores on screening instruments accurately identify high academic potential in kindergarten? (2) Are children's scores on kindergarten screening instruments consistent with high academic achievement in 8th grade? (3) Is early screening for high academic potential biased by the child's gender, family income, birth semester, or level of the mother's education? A mean score combination of the instruments provided the most reliable and valid screening, but as systematic error by gender and level of mother's education was identified, similar instruments should be used cautiously.

Screening for Potential, Assessing for Achievement: A Study of Instrument Validity for Early Identification of High Academic Potential in Norway

Fine motor skills are needed by children when entering elementary school. The skills help them to be active in class. However, many children do not have fine motor skills, so they have difficulty participating in classroom activities. This is presumably due to the lack of stimulation at home or in early childhood education institutions. This study investigated the effectiveness of improving fine motor skills for children aged 5-6 years using eggshell collage media. The study used a quasi-experimental approach with a pre-test and post-test design. The participants of this study were 15 children aged 5-6 years at early childhood education institutions selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data analysis used paired sample t-test. The results showed that before the action (pre-test), the researchers categorized children's fine motor skills as they started the growing phase; after the action (post-test), fine motor skills were categorized as developed as the expected phase, and there was an influence of eggshell collage media. With a Significant 0.000 < 0.05, it is recommended that parents and teachers implement eggshell collage media to improve the children's fine motor skills.

Improving Fine Motor Skills of Children Using Eggshell Collage Media

Gifted and talented children should be identified at an early stage and provided with opportunities to thrive, flourish, and develop in inclusive education. Inclusive education refers to a sense of belonging, and development to one’s fullest, including talent development. This international scoping review aims to investigate contextual and environmental factors contributing to well-functioning inclusive education, with a particular focus on early identification of gifted and talented children. The Bioecological model for human development and the Differentiating Model of Giftedness and Talent constituted the framework. Twenty-three (N=23) research articles were included and two thematical analyses were conducted. Regarding early identification, five influential factors (i.e., themes) were created: Knowledge about giftedness and talent; Opportunities for all children to demonstrate their abilities; Identification strategies; Collaborations; and Teacher education and professional development. Regarding well-functioning inclusive education, five factors (i.e., themes) were created, which, in addition to early identification, will also play a role; these were: Policies recognising inclusion and gifted and talented children; Appreciation of diversity; Additional educational provisions; Peer interactions and learning; and Home-school partnership. A factor model for early identification and well-functioning inclusive education targeting giftedness and talent is presented, and suggestions for practitioners and further research are provided.
