Optical Solitons From Fibers To Photonic Crystals

Inelastic neutron measurements of the high temperature lattice excitations in NaI show surprising features. In thermal equilibrium at 555 K an intrinsic mode, localized in three dimensions, is observed at a single frequency near the center of the spectral phonon gap, polarized along [111]. At higher temperatures mixing between the intrinsic localized mode and the zone boundary TO mode is observed. Higher energy inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering measurements on a room temperature NaI crystal indicate that the creation energy of the ground state of the intrinsic localized mode is 299 meV.

Virtual and mixed reality in the study of the geometry of the crystal lattice

The rapid development of new technologies is often associated with the realization of nonequilibrium states in materials, in which new mechanisms of structure evolution, different from the traditional ones, can arise. One example is the formation of crowdions, that is, interstitial atoms located in close-packed atomic rows. Crowdions can move at subsonic or supersonic speeds. It has previously been demonstrated that supersonic crowdion clusters are much more efficient at transferring mass than classic supersonic crowdions. This work presents an analysis of the propagation of supersonic crowdion clusters in parallel close-packed atomic rows in an fcc Morse crystal. Supersonic 2-crowdions are excited in four close-packed atomic rows, between which there is one close-packed row, which is not initially excited. The counterintuitive formation of a vacancy in the inner atomic row was observed rather far from the point of excitation. The distance between the vacancy in the inner row and the initiation point depends on the initiation energy. The mechanism of vacancy formation is described. The results obtained can be useful for analyzing the rearrangement and accumulation of defects in materials under extreme conditions.

Evolution of supersonic 2-crowdion clusters in a 3D Morse lattice

The introduction of modern technologies in the learning process at school is an important task, both for the education system as a whole and for an individual teacher. The ability to work with new teaching aids allows the teacher to interest students in their subject. One of these tools is virtual and mixed reality headsets. The emphasis is on mixed reality, although the two are often closely related. The article provides a brief overview of works devoted to the use of mixed reality in teaching physics, a study of the readiness of students of a pedagogical university to use this technology in their future professional activities is carried out. The questionnaire for expert assessment of mixed reality developments has been modified, and a survey of experts in this field has been conducted. The results of the research may be of interest to teachers of various specialties, senior students and graduate students in the field of physics teaching methods.

Some aspects of using mixed reality technologies in the training of physics teachers

Using the method of molecular dynamics and taking Ni3Al and Pt3Al as examples, crystals of the A3B composition are considered for the possibility of excitation of soliton-type waves in them. The potentials obtained by the embedded-atom method were used to describe interatomic interactions. It is shown that the harmonic external stimulus can excite waves of the soliton type in a Pt3Al crystal, but not in Ni3Al. Such compression–expansion waves are generated because of excitation of discrete breathers with soft nonlinearity that cannot exist in a Ni3Al crystal near the affected region. The detected waves are capable of propagating to thousands of nanometers along the Pt3Al crystal without losses of integrity and speed. The shape of the obtained wave corresponds to the kink solution of the sine-Gordon equation. The aggregate amount of energy transferred by a wave is determined by the number of rows of atoms involved in fluctuations; this may involve dozens and hundreds of electron volts.
