Impact of surgical site infection on healthcare costs and patient outcomes: a systematic review in six European countries

Background
Post-discharge surgical site infections (SSI) are a major source of morbidity, expense and anxiety for patients. However, patient perceptions about barriers experienced while seeking care for post-discharge SSI have not been assessed in depth. We explored patient experience of SSI and openness to a mobile health (mHealth) wound monitoring “app” as a novel solution to address this problem.

Patient Perspectives on Post-Discharge Surgical Site Infections: Towards a Patient-Centered Mobile Health Solution

Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) is the most common type of healthcare-associated infection, contributing to substantial annual morbidity, costs, and deaths. In the United States it is the number one reason for hospital re-admission after surgery. Relatively little attention has been paid to the proportion of SSIs that occur after discharge. This paper systematically reviews two decades of publications to characterize better the proportion of SSIs that are identified after discharge and the need for better early detection and treatment. Methods: A restricted systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed to identify English-language studies published after 1995 that include the occurrence of pre-discharge and post-discharge SSIs. The data abstracted were the date of publication, country of origin, procedure, study design, surveillance system, population size, follow-up rate, and SSI counts and proportions. A patient-centered system in a provider-centered world: challenges of incorporating post-discharge wound data into practice

A diverse array of pathogen-related, patient-related, and caretaker-related issues influence risk and prevention of surgical site infections (SSIs). The entire surgical team involved in health care settings in which surgical procedures are performed play a pivotal role in the prevention of SSIs. In this article, current knowledge of SSI risk factors and prevention methods is reviewed. Although new avenues that can be explored in the prevention of SSIs in veterinary medicine are described, the main conclusion drawn is that the best method for prevention of SSI is to adhere to what we already know.
