This review is concerned with pulse stretchers and compressors as key components of ultra-high power laser facilities that take advantage of chirped-pulse amplification. The potentialities, characteristics, configurations and methods for the matching and alignment of these devices are examined, with particular attention to the history of the optics of ultra-short, ultra-intense pulses before and after 1985, when the chirped-pulse amplification method was proposed, which drastically changed the view of the feasibility of creating ultra-high power laser sources. The review is intended primarily for young scientists and experts who begin to address the amplification and compression of chirped pulses, experts in laser optics and all who are interested in scientific achievements in the field of ultra-high power laser systems.

Advances and limitations of phase dispersion measurement by spectrally and spatially resolved interferometry

In this paper the results of the theoretical and experimental study of spatiotemporal distortions emerging in noncollinear optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifiers are presented. In a noncollinear parametric amplifier, when the pulse fronts of the pump and signal are not matched, the signal pulse becomes tilted and, aside from angular dispersion, has a spatial chirp. The expressions relating the magnitudes of the acquired spatial chirp and angular dispersion to the temporal chirp of the signal pulse are derived. It is shown that the magnitudes of the induced spatial chirp and angular dispersion decrease at different rates with the increase of the signal pulse temporal chirp and, for the large temporal chirp, the spatial chirp mainly contributes to the pulse-front tilt of the signal, whereas the induced signal pulse tilt is independent of the signal pulse temporal chirp, but is always smaller than the tilt of the pump pulse.

The temporal contrast is classified into two main regimes, the nanosecond-scale and the picosecond-scale contrast prior to the main pulse. The Lund terawatt laser system is shown to be improved on the nano- and picosecond-scale by a factor of 10 and 50, respectively, when it was optimized for contrast but not for energy. Calculations are also presented to emphasize the role of angular dispersion on the picosecond contrast. Finally we show a compromise between the duration and contrast of femtosecond laser pulses amplified in an optical parametric (chirped pulse) amplifier.
