We develop a dipole model for DESY HERA deep inelastic scattering data which incorporates the impact parameter distribution of the proton. The model describes the inclusive total ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{*}p$ cross sections as well as the diffractive $J/\ensuremath{\psi}$ differential cross sections. We compare the model with previous approaches and show that the t distributions are sensitive to saturation phenomena. We estimate the boundary of the saturation region and show that it dominates the data in the low-${Q}^{2}$ region where the total ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{*}p$ cross section exhibits the same universal rise as hadronic cross sections. The model is then extended to nuclei and shows good agreement with the nuclear shadowing data at small x. Finally, we estimate the saturation scale in nuclei.

This chapter of the report of the “Flavor in the era of the LHC” Workshop discusses the theoretical, phenomenological and experimental issues related to flavor phenomena in the charged lepton sector and in flavor conserving CP-violating processes. We review the current experimental limits and the main theoretical models for the flavor structure of fundamental particles. We analyze the phenomenological consequences of the available data, setting constraints on explicit models beyond the standard model, presenting benchmarks for the discovery potential of forthcoming measurements both at the LHC and at low energy, and exploring options for possible future experiments.

The sensitivity of rare event physics experiments like neutrino or direct dark matter detection crucially depends on the background level. A significant background contribution originates from the primordial actinides thorium (Th) and uranium (U) and the progenies of their decay chains. The applicability of ultra-sensitive Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) for the direct detection of Th and U impurities in three copper samples is evaluated. Although AMS has been proven to reach outstanding sensitivities for long-lived isotopes, this technique has only very rarely been used to detect ultra low concentrations of primordial actinides. Here it is utilized for the first time to detect primordial Th and U in ultra pure copper serving as shielding material in low level detectors. The lowest concentrations achieved were ( 1.5 ± 0.6 ) · 10 - 11  g/g for Th and ( 8 ± 4 ) · 10 - 14  g/g for U which corresponds to ( 59 ± 24 ) and ( 1.0 ± 0.5 )  μBq/kg, respectively.

Ultrasensitive detection method for primordial nuclides in copper with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry

This paper presents the final interpretation of the results from DELPHI on the searches for Higgs bosons in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM). A few representative scenarios are considered, that include CP conservation and explicit CP violation in the Higgs sector. The experimental results encompass the searches for neutral Higgs bosons at LEP1 and LEP2 in final states as expected in the MSSM, as well as LEP2 searches for charged Higgs bosons and for neutral Higgs bosons decaying into hadrons independent of the quark flavour. The data reveal no significant excess with respect to background expectations. The results are translated into excluded regions of the parameter space in the various scenarios. In the CP-conserving case, these lead to limits on the masses of the lightest scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs bosons, h and A, and on tan beta. The dependence of these limits on the top quark mass is discussed. Allowing for CP violation reduces the experimental sensitivity to Higgs bosons. It is shown that this effect depends strongly on the values of the parameters responsible for CP violation in the Higgs sector.

Higgs boson searches in CP-conserving and CP-violating MSSM scenarios with the DELPHI detector

Results are presented of a search for pair production of heavy objects decaying into four hadronic jets, as expected for example from associated or pair production of MSSM Higgs bosons, hA ~or HH, using a data sample of 5.9pb−1 of e+e− collisions at s√=130−136GeV collected with the DELPHI detector at LEP in November 1995. The data and expectations from standard processes agree after four-jet selections. An analysis based on b-tagging finds no hA ~candidate with high mass. A study optimized to search for HH ~events with mass in the 40−50GeV/c2 range also finds no candidate. Finally a comparison is made with a recent ALEPH analysis which found an excess of four-jet events with high multiplicity and high mass. Such a signal is not observed in the DELPHI data, although a slight excess in the mass region around 105GeV/c2 is seen.
